Marijuana is a very popular drug in today’s society. It can be used in many ways, such as hand-rolled cigarette, or it can be mixed into food. Marijuana contains over 500 chemicals; the main one is delta-9-tetrahydro-cannabinol, also known as THC. Marijuana legalization has been one of the top controversial issues in the United States over the past few years. Some people argue that marijuana helps relieve some diseases and pain while others believe that it would cause more harm than good. Before this assignment, I was not concerned about marijuana. I have heard conversations about it, but I was not interested. I have read posts and some articles about it on social media websites but I never bothered to do research about it until now. One reason is that “marijuana has been shown to alleviate symptoms of a wide range of debilitating medical conditions, including cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer 's disease, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), epilepsy, Crohn 's disease, and glaucoma, and is often an effective alternative to narcotic painkillers”(1). Only marijuana work as a treatment some of these diseases so legalizing it would give people more time to live. Another reason is that “marijuana has potent anti-cancer properties and could one day help unlock new cancer treatments”(1). As of today, there is no cure for cancer yet. Legalizing marijuana would provide hope and a way towards finding the cure for cancer. It would be helpful since the number of people diagnosed with cancer is increasing rapidly. It has also been found that “medical marijuana laws do not result in an increase in rates of marijuana use as well as traffic fatalities, prescription overdose deaths, suicides, and crime rates”(1).
