Animal testing is an on-going debate in the United States and even throughout the world. Many popular associations approve of animal testing (ProCon 1). On the other hand, many people prohibit animal testing because they believe that animals should be treated the same way that humans are treated. (Flecknell Par. 4). Scientist prefer animal testing because it is easy and effective (Par. 5). Even though animals are being harmed, animals are being used to our advantage because medical researchers can study the causes of diseases, develop medical drugs, and researchers are now having a better understanding of the human body process because of animals. First of all, many people use animals to research on because they are effective. They are effective because it helps many scientist have a better understanding of the human body process (Flecknell Par. 5). Medical researchers approve of animal testing because it is accurate and productive (Gleason 18). Most animal related tests help scientist study different types of diseases and find out what it causing them, then eventually creating medicine based on their results from the experiment(s) (Flecknell Par. 1). For example, scientist use chimpanzees because they have similar DNA to humans (Day 13). Without these animals, medical researchers would not be able to find a cure for Hepatitis B (ProCon 1). Also, the Watanabe Rabbit is used on research involving high cholesterol (Day 13). Laboratory Mice are used because they have short life spans, while also having similar DNA as humans (ProCon 1). To add on, there have been many benefits with animal research and testing. For example, the Polio Disease was a popular disease in the United States. With animal testing, the vaccine became less popular over time because the medicine for the vaccine that was tested on animals and scientist were able to find a cure
