Countries have had courageous and world changing leaders over the course of history. Most of these well-known leaders have come from countries that are global superpowers. A rare exception is Eva Duarte Peron. Eva was born into a poor family, and against all odds rose up and became prominent in Argentine politics. Well before becoming First Lady, Eva was passionate about helping the poor. Tragically, her work was cut short when she died young. Through her experience, influence, and prominence as Argentina’s most notable First Lady, Eva Peron, long after her death is still considered a champion of the poor.
Maria Eva Ibarguren, called Eva or Evita later in her life, was born on May 7, 1919 in Los Toldos, Argentina. Eva was born with her mother’s surname due to the fact that her parents were not married. Her father was married to another woman, and Eva’s mother was his mistress, making Eva’s family his second, illegitimate family. Despite this, Eva and her siblings preferred to use their father’s last name, Duarte.
Eva’s father left her family to return to his first family when she was very young, and he died soon thereafter in 1926 leaving Eva’s family with nothing. Her older siblings had to work to help the family (Fraser 3). Four years later, the Duarte family moved to Junin.
From a young age, Eva had aspirations of becoming a famous actress. She enjoyed the theatre, and often put on small performances with her sister Erminda. When Eva was fifteen, she moved to Buenos Aires to pursue her interest in theater, a risky pursuit, because finding work and achieving success were not guaranteed. Alisa Rosenbaum (her original name) was born and raised in Russian Empire in the beginning of 20th century. She was from a well-to-do family. Her father was a successful entrepreneur who run his own pharmacy and her mother was an aristocratic woman who took care of their three daughters.
One very successful leader, who was also a hero in the popular press, was Eleanor Roosevelt. Eleanor Roosevelt made enduring changes in the role of the First Lady of the United States, and championed change in human rights around the world. The First Lady became a career position, a political platform, a media persona, and a worldwide influence at a time when most women did not pursue careers. Eleanor Roosevelt stood up for women when women did not have any rights. She then stood up for African-American, most notably the Tuskegee Airmen during World War Two, at a time when African-American did not have civil rights (The Tuskegee Airmen, n.d.). Once she left the White House, she emerged as a worldwide leader of human right when she authored the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with the United Nations. Throughout her life, she used her high social standing, her political prowess, and own passion for human rights to breach barriers, influence followers, and create lasting change.
If one were to look back one hundred years in time, the world would look drastically different. In fact, the United States would be almost unrecognizable. Not only would clothing, transportation, and the price of milk look different, but men and women would not have equal rights, racial issues would be dangerously prominent in society, and an organization geared toward world peace would be nonexistent. One woman made a colossal effort during her lifetime to create change for the betterment of her country, and also, the world. Eleanor Roosevelt, often given the title of “First Lady of the World,” according to the article, “(Anna) Eleanor Roosevelt,” was the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Many people admire and remember Eleanor Roosevelt for her unfailing dedication to her husband’s presidency; however, few realize that she was unlike any first lady before her, in that, Eleanor was independently involved in her own political platforms and beliefs.

To begin with, one of her first and most memorable achievements was undoubtedly being a conductor of the underground railroad. Having escaped 1849, her first trip began a year later in 1850. According to Document B, she had escorted three fugitives including her niece to freedom. She had made her last trip after ten years in 1960. Between these years, it is estimated that she had liberated around 40 slaves. I believe that this is one of the things that really enabled her to keep pushing and to keep helping out for a cause. She has broken the stereotype of what a first lady is expected to be and what tasks they may have. Clinton has created a lasting impact to society and continues to expand her legacy on the world today.
