There are many problems that need to be addressed in the public schools today. What factors are causing these problems in the schools? The main causes are absence of prayer, the many pressures of school, lack of dress code, and insufficient numbers of caring teachers, faculty, and students.When I say lack of prayer in the schools, I don't mean lets make everyone one religion and every morning at school we can pray in that one religion. Instead there should be a moment of silence. Not to take up time but to let everyone have a moment to pray to whomever or however they wish.
For the kid who's grandpa died and has to go to school because they need their two points for this six weeks. And the ones who wish not to pray can take that moment to just think. Lord knows we as high school students don't have much time to just stop and think. There are many pressures in the public schools. All of a sudden in high school everything changes. Everyone takes that first merger into "the real world".
As a junior there is much more pressure put on the students. One minute a sophomore thinking "Yeah I'm going to college". While the next as a junior thinking "How on earth am I going to get to college". Now that we are juniors we are suppose to be grown up. Everything from "Where am I getting my gas money?" to "Where am I going to college?" is going through our minds all of the time, and yet some how we are supposed to come out calm and prosperous.
All of this pressure and many of young adults do not get a chance to let it out. It is like tossing a human body in to outer space with no protection. It's a vacuum that just tears it apart piece by piece. Could this have been what caused the Columbine shooting? Perhaps there was so much pressure put on those two boys to be in the "in crowd" that one day they just couldn't take it anymore.
A small element in all of this is the dress code. How sad is this? There is a shooting at least every year in a school, and administrators and teachers are worried about whether our shorts are too short. The office complains of girls wearing shorts that are too short when there are rather larger girls running around with an extra layer of skin.
This example is subjective vs. objective. The subjective perspective is what we know and have known through experience, and the objective perspective is imagining the perspective of something else. An example of the subjective is ourselves because we only know what it is like to be and feel like ourselves. An example of the objective is the idea of being a bat, which Nagel explains in the textbook. Nagel says “I want to know what it is like for a bat to be a bat. Yet if I try to imagine this, I am restricted to the resources of my own mind, and those resources are inadequate to the task” (Intro to Philosophy p.405). This quote explains how is is not possible to have the same mental experience a real bat has through physical observations. The reason for this is because we only know what it is like to be ourselves, and if we wanted to know what it is like to be a bat, we would be unable to do that because we do not have the same mind as the bats. This is the reason why the objective perspective is unachievable by our minds. I agree with all aspects of this argument for many reasons. One of these reasons is because I know through experience that I am unable to know what a bat or any other organism feels like because the only resources I have are the experiences I have been through. Many individuals have been affected negatively by trouble makers in school. Troublemakers have either disrupted classes or bullied other students. Yes, trouble makers may harm one’s learning environment, but should they be kicked out of school? Though many individuals argue that troublemakers will not change and hold the class down, they should not be kicked out because they need help. Most of these kids that are disobedient do not know the distinction between right and wrong. We should not withdraw trouble makers from school, rather, we should help these troublemakers and teach them right from wrong. In the article “Let’s Really Reform Our Schools” by Anita Garland, she states that American high schools are disasters because there are troublemakers (694). She asserts that the withdrawal of troublemakers in schools would make the learning environment peaceful for students who want to learn
Throughout my lifetime I’ve been exposed to many different styles of music. One of the most emotionally connected music styles I’ve encountered would definitely be instrumental jazz. When I was younger I mostly listened to blues and smooth jazz, but more recently I’ve been attracted to faster tracks and harder beats like those you hear in the Swing era of the 1920’s. On Tuesday, October 27th I attended the performance of the jazz band: Sylvan Street, as a part of the University of Miami’s music festival (Festival Miami). The show started at eight o’clock at night cost ten dollars for students. Throughout the show, the band provided an incredible mixture of different styles of jazz while delivering an electrifying performance that captured the true essence of what jazz truly is.

I attended Sam Neufeld’s jazz trumpet performance. As soon as I walked in I can say I was astonished by the medium sized auditorium with instruments perfectly aligned on stage. The lights then dimmed and the men performing walked toward their instruments.
The rest of the trumpet section was also very lively; I felt they carried the main theme in almost every song which certainly kept me interested in the performance. The conductor kept the band on time, and to me they never missed a beat. One could tell they were certainly well rehearsed and truly knew how to use their instruments. A lot of music these days has become focused on generating the catchiest lyrics or chorus, so seeing this jazz ensemble was very refreshing. I was delightfully surprised to see such remarkable music talent at a performance of that size and caliper.

For my concert review, I went to see the performance of Maynard Ferguson and his big band at Jazz Alley on Jan. 12th 2015. I asked some of my friends to join and they gladly agreed. Since two of my friends were a musician themselves and loved seeing live music whenever possible. They even went ahead and made a reservation. First time in Jazz Alley, the place was filled with various groups of people eating, drinking, and chatting. Our table was in good position, plus I was able to see the stage very well. On Sunday, April 22, 2018, I experienced my first evert Jazz concert. The CSUN Jazz Faculty Concert opened up my perspective on jazz music before attending this concert I had the idea that jazz concerts were very mellow and low like the type of music people would listen to during yoga. However, the CSUN Jazz Faculty Concert showed me otherwise the concert was very hyped and upbeat like dance music even so that people in the audience got up and began to dance at certain points. Although, program pamphlets were not provided the jazz concert was very easy to follow along with and understand which is impressive considering that the first concert had two new members the day of the performance since the original two members were unable to attend on short notice. The second jazz concert was performed by CSUN undergraduate students who also continued the upbeat feeling of the first jazz group.
On Monday, October 09, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. the UIC Jazz Ensemble’s performance highlighted the music of two giants of the big band tradition, Count Basie and Thad Jones. The concert lasted about one hour. It started at 7:30 p.m. and went on till about 8:40p.m. There were seven songs that were performed. Every song was around ten minutes long. Some were a little bit shorter, about five to six minutes in length, and a couple songs were a little over ten minutes. The concert seemed to be well organized time-wise and well timed. In the beginning, the argument was whether or not the school day should be started with a prayer over the PA system. This didn't last long, as anyone can see that there is so much diversity in the religious beliefs of high school kids today. The argument then moved on to replace "prayer" with "moment of silence. " Those in favor of prayer in school pose several arguments. They say it will increase tolerance in schools, as children learn about different religions and how they practice.
What must be realized is that religious practice in school is against the very basic policies of our nation. In a country as diverse as the United States, openly observing any religion in a school has the possibility of inflicting offense onto others. School should be a place where students feel comfortable to learn and achieve. No student should have to learn to deal with feelings of discomfort based on the actions of a fellow classmate.

Poor eating habits are affecting people all over the world. People are eating unreasonable sized portions five to seven times a day. In the article, Childhood Obesity, written by Jimerson he states, “poor diet and nutrition can negatively affect mood, self-esteem, and school performance as well as weight and the risk for diabetes and other health problems” (39). Parents who are not aware and concerned about their children’s health are setting them up for failure later on in life. Schools are beginning to provide students with healthier, more nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, and less sugary snacks. Fast food restaurants are rapidly spreading all over the country providing cheap, quick meals all day, everyday. Unfortunately, healthy foods such as meat, vegetables, and fresh fruit are available at a variety of grocery stores and markets for a much higher cost. Introducing adolescents to healthier meals and snacks will gradually decrease the amount of gained weight and, as a result, obesity in today’s children. Moreover uniforms can help students save time. Additionally parents won’t have to waste so much money on clothes hence will have a better budget.
