Are school uniforms good or bad? A dress code in schools has always been a major issue for some students. Some students feel they should be allowed to wear whatever they want because it makes them feel comfortable and attractive to other people. There are many different reasons for school uniforms. Some people feel as clothing is a relatively minor issue when it comes to education. Others may feel they have to compete with the most recent designer fashion look of other students. Many people believe wearing uniforms will improve the educational environment. School uniforms should be required in public schools to help improve student involvement in academics, less violence, and boost student self- esteem. Students should have to wear uniforms to help emphasis from competition on who looks better to better academics, decrease violence, self-esteem and personal achievements. Academic success is very important when choosing a career path to take. Education is very important when trying to figure out what you want to do in life. Schools should implement uniforms to help students stay focused on their academics. Some students may feel as fashion is more important than an education. School uniforms reduce distractions and disciplinary problems in class. (Cook, 2008). For example, a girl student shows up to class wearing a short skirt and a see-through blouse. All the attention is taken off the lesson plan and directed to the female student. As we all know, some people’s self-esteem may start to feel down because a beautiful young lady shows up to class violating school dress code. Students begin to feel the need for competition. Wearing uniforms can actually enforce a more professional look to many students. When students arrive to school looking professional, they tend to become more focused on their education. Some people say that uniforms infringe on students freedom. However, uniforms would not cause a threat to student’s individual freedom because there are lots of other things that makes you besides clothing. People would be noticed for who they are as an individual rather than what they wear.
