We walk to the city the way we walk through nature, however we are surrounded by an environment that has been moulded to accommodate us. We navigate streets through canyons of artificial stone, dwarfed by the walls that have been built around us - it is surprising how little one would notice and live life surrounded by a manufacture world but take little interest on how it looks and feels. Architecture shapes our environment in a way of redefining space to meet the needs of everyday life. In a way, it is regarded as the cornerstone of the built environment affecting all of us; feelings, emotions, dreams and memories.

To express architecture as a photographer, one must nurture the things the majority of people will discard. Capturing the essence of the moment, in order to keep them alive. By photographing interesting elements of a building, one explores and learns from a shot onto a page. Images are fast replacing words as our primary language - they define our ideas of beauty, truth and history.

In the process of photographing, I began to realise that the lens are governed by a set of rules of rhythm, balance and scale when examining the structure through its repetition of arrangement within windows; certain pattern on its façade or possibly the size proportional to human scale. The photograph is a great example that embraces architecture of simple forms, clean lines and open spaces. As a functioning building, a clear inspiration was taken from the modern movement in terms of its materials: structural steel, reinforced concrete and glass. Putting architecture in context could either add or detract from the photograph. On this point, provided that the setting compliments the building then a wide photo is more appropriate. Nonetheless, if the surrounding environment is not relevant with the message to be conveyed then cropping the photo is the solution.

1. Preparation

Before commencing the photo shoot, it was vital to be aware of the weather forecast in advance. Weather is one of the key points to be addressed in photography as it dominates the lighting conditions of the scene and could, as a result, impact the result of the photograph. Ideally, the plan was to make a trip in the course of morning/late afternoon as during those times I could get the finest lighting condition.

2. Gear

The angle of the lens determines the constraints of the composition. For instance, a wide angle or ultra-wide angle lens assists to achieve a dramatic composition and is very likely to be the most significant type of lens for architectural photography.
