Heat Exchangers are pieces of engineering equipment designed to enhance the efficiency of the transfer of heat energy from one medium to another. The net affect of the Heat Exchanger is to cool one surface. The media that facilitates the exchange of heat may consist of either liquids, gases or solids. The two surfaces can be in direct contact or separated by a wall. These option allow the engineers to achieve appropriate mixing results at the given temperature range and/or flow rate. Some of the most widely employed applications of Heat Exchangers involve power plants, chemical plants, internal combustion engines, oil refineries, space heating, refrigeration, etc. Heat transfer involves the transfer of thermal energy by either convection, conduction or radiation. Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy from one surface to another in direct contact when the surfaces are at different temperatures.
