"Jay, never in my mind since you have been on this earth, have I ever doubted any of your abilities or the intelligence you possess…never forget what you went through to even be alive today.” I can remember this exact statement my mother told me as I held back tears. Not tears of sorrow or pain, but tears of gratitude and joy. She whispered them to me a few hours after I graduated from high school receiving an advanced diploma. Overcoming difficult obstacles has seemingly become the “story of my life.” Before being born, my mother had two miscarriages. During my birth, fluids were trapped in my lungs. This threatened my existence only hours after breathing air. During my extended stay at the hospital, my parents, who are devout Christians, named me after my father, Johnny. This is because the name Johnny is translated into “God is Gracious” or merciful. Given the hurdles my parents had to endure for me to be on this earth, I know they sincerely believed that. However, the obstacles and hurdles did not stop there. President Franklin Roosevelt said “When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.” This quote has been my motivation and encouragement throughout my life. For me, it spoke to my strong perseverance, my ability to keep pushing through adversity. Often times, I jokingly told family and friends that adversity was my best friend. Sometimes in my life, I’ve honesty felt that it was only me, adversity, and a little piece of hope. That hope is what gave me the strength in life on a daily basis. As I grew up going through grade school, many times I wanted to just give up and not finish. I starting speaking this as early as the third grade when I was told by a teacher that because of my learning style, which is a ... ... middle of paper ... ...o “leave the world a better place” than we found it. My early successes and achievements really helped me in my undergraduate and graduate school career. Being in a comfortable environment allowed me to take up to twenty-one credit hours per semester, become involved on campus, work a full-time job with the government, and succeed in my coursework. I entered my undergraduate studies not sure if I would succeed or not because of the struggles in grade school. However, because I worked hard and kept pushing, I look forward to graduating with a good grade point average and completing my requirements for my MBA degree while I am still young. It is my sincere belief that I will continue my pursuit toward excellence while attending Howard University. I am ready for the challenges ahead, and I am finally realizing my full potential to succeed at whatever I put my mind to.
In my life I experience a lot of hardships and heartbreak. I believe going through hard times can be a good thing because I learn more about myself, how I handle situations, and it may also teach me to be more humble. Life is tough and sometimes I have to face my challenges, but I don’t have to face my problems alone. Some say a dog is a man’s best friend. It’s because a dog can read
Throughout my years of high school, I have battled a chronic knee injury which was devastating for me. I have had surgery not once, not twice, but three times in efforts to correct the problem I was having. Throughout these past few years I often found myself asking, “Why me?” or “Why did this have to happen to me?”. Overtime, I started to ask myself a better question which was, “Why not me?”. I feel everything happens for a reason and I was dealt this difficult obstacle because God knew I could handle it. This injury has made me mentally tougher than I could have ever imagined. Along with my mental toughness, I have had to face some tough decisions at a
As a retired Seal, I still retain the memories of the struggles and hardships I have encountered over my life. Starting at the age of five, my mother met a man named Leon. He would always criticize me for something I did or what I did wrong. Every little detail that was not done correctly would lead to pain and discipline. This was Leon’s way of ,”setting me straight”. Finally I had enough. I decided to leave home by boarding the wrong bus after school one day out of fear. I was so scared to go home. But I eventually decided that I have to live with it, I knew Leon was going to stay I could do nothing to change that. In life there are things that you can't change. I believe that you must learn to cope with problems in order to succeed, not by running away from them.
Adversity has been part of my life since elementary. That is when my father and mother divorced, and I was thrown for being responsible for my non- English speaking mother and a sister two years younger than me. My mother, although, responsible in a motherly sense, could not deal with the basic issues of day to day life. Such as paying the bills, helping us on our homework, or even cooking us food. Being in ESL classes up to elementary didn’t help matters any. I had to figure out a way to show my teachers I was capable of being a bright child. I always admired the children that were in GT or TAG classes and I would ask myself, why I wasn’t good enough to be in them? Finally, in the sixth grade, while filling out my class registrations, I...
Throughout my education I have watched my peers force themselves to school, never having the desire to learn or wanting to be apart of the joys of education. I am proud to say that I have received the desire of learning. Learning isn’t something that is forced or pushed upon me. I have been able to learn because that's what I’ve wanted. As a student, I am proud of my achievements. I spread myself thin with work, school, and sports but I enjoy having much on my plate I like the challenge of learning in that I can learn about anything I wish. Throughout my education I have succeeded, I have been in numerous AP and honors classes through my academic career and I have also obtained academic awards with my time in school. I believe Mount Saint Joseph is going to suit me best for what I’d like to do with my future. I plan to persevere and dedicate myself to my work, MSJ has the best staff I can find that will help with this rigorous task.
I am a junior at Princeton University where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a certificate in History and the Practice of Diplomacy. As someone with a knack for economic research and an interest in working for the federal government, I hope to have the opportunity to join the Economic Research Service as a student trainee this summer. Studying economics in the classroom as well as working with a professor on economic research has made me want to pursue a career in economic consulting, and I am confident that I possess all the skills necessary to be a successful intern at the Economic Research Service. I am zealous and passionate about all my endeavors, and I am sure that my can-do attitude in addition to my experience with objective problem solving in both professional and academic settings make me an excellent candidate for this internship.
My love for business is not something I was born with. It took over a decade of experience and exploration to discover my passion. This discovery began ten years ago when I accepted a position at The Pitney Bowes Corporation. My job was to make unsolicited phone calls to prospective businesses in order to sell our base model postage meter. All that was required was reading a script, word for word, to potential buyers. Yet, after a week of working at Pitney Bowes, I still didn't know important details about the meter, like what it looked like, and how it actually operated. My manager acted a bit surprised when I asked to see the meter, but she agreed, and I took a walk to an adjacent building where I saw first hand what I was selling. It looked completely different from what I had expected, but by viewing and touching it first hand, my ability to convey to people what I was offering improved dramatically. Once I viewed the device, I felt more confident to adlib on the sales pitch. In a couple of weeks reading my hybrid pitch led to a higher rate of sales. People were more apt to buy from someone who sounded like a person and less like a robot. My sales steadily improved and in my third month I was the number one sales person out of over 200 employees. Management implemented some of my changes in the selling process and as a result, overall sales of the entry model postage meter increased significantly.
Something that I have learned after overcoming this battle is that life is very unpredictable and it is up to the individual to rise above and choose the right path. This excerpt from the poem “Recovery” by Maya Angelou has given me encouragement and inspiration to move on with my life and become the best person that I can be: “A last love, proper in conclusion, should snip the wings forbidding further flight. But I now reft of that confusion, am lifted up and speeding towards the light.” I live by these words everyday because they motivate me to succeed and overcome the impossible.
I have accomplished a lot in a short period; however, my journey is not complete until I continue my education. Essentially, this degree will help foster my growth and career success. My passion and dedication will speak for itself. My hard work and determination will prevail and I am a fit more than the next applicant because I have the passion, experience, critical thinking and analytical skills needed to complete this program through successfully arguing my capstone in front of a board or committee. My goals are definitely aligned with this program and I hope my next read is an acceptance letter from the admissions council.
I try to live my life by Henry David Thoreau’s quote: “However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not as bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will find faults even in paradise.” This quote has motivated me through many rough times. Many times I wanted to give up on life, but I didn't. I kept moving forward. Here is my story.
After graduation from KOREA University, I decided to enter Hyndai MotorCompany(HMC), which is the largest Korean car manufacturer and global player, to pursue a career as an international businessman. In January 1991, I joined Domestic Finance Team of HMC. My specific assignment was to plan monthly and annual financial schedules for HMC's domestic funding needs. About two years later, in January of 1993, I was transferred to Retail Finance Team from Domestic Finance Team and responsible for financing by the sales and factoring of Car Receivables.
I’m a student at Tompkins Cortland Community College this is my first semester as a college student. I plan to go to college for four years and only be at TC3 for this one semester, then transfer to a four year school. College has grown around the world more than ever and more people are attending college more than ever. I have chosen to go to college because of the rewards after graduation. Yes it is another four years of school but by getting more education and an extended degree gives me more opportunities for better jobs and more money. The career I have chosen to study is business administration. I am hoping that it takes me to a great job managing a company or possibly being an accountant.
Public Administration, as a field, had always captivated me right from my undergraduate days. I believe my curiosity for this field comes from my family. Both my father and my uncle were politicians. During my early days, I used to go to my father’s office where I had a great chance to observe different kinds of people with various jobs and interests. This was the first time I learned how mutual interests bring people together. When I understood how public relations work naturally, it forced me strongly to study and comprehend the complex theory of politics. After finishing high school, I made up my mind to pursue a career in Political Science. For this reason, I was enrolled to Istanbul Bilgi University’s Political Science program. After having completed my Bachelor’s Degree, I decided to excel in this field by completing a Master’s degree.
Have you ever had a time in your life where you felt like everything was just dumped on you? I did, and undoubtedly it happened just as I came to school at State University. That saying, “When it rains, it pours,” just seemed to fit me perfectly. Within a two week period one of my friends from high school committed suicide, my grandma went in the hospital, and my boyfriend broke up with me. Yet, from these experiences in my life, I grew, more than I have ever grown before. This is why I am writing about it. Although, everyone goes through hard times, there were not many people out there who related to me. That is why it was hard to get help when it was needed. Maybe someone can learn from my experience and be just as strong as I was.
Ever since I was young I have always been interested in businesses and how they operate, as well as being fascinated by other languages and cultural differences. My passion for the subject expanded when I chose business studies and french, as part of my A-level education. Although these subjects are somewhat demanding, I find them extremely interesting. I believe that a degree combining both these aspects is the correct choice for me. I am confident that a course in international business studies and modern languages satisfies both these interests. I will be looking forward to learning about the international business world and I am relishing the thought of learning to integrate with other European countries. The idea of learning to communicate with other people across the world is something that has always appealed greatly to me.
