Have you ever experienced someone judging you based off of your appearance rather than trying to get to know you? Or even worse, been the person guilty of doing so. Unfortunately, this is extremely common in today’s hypercritical society. The question that arises is, can judgement of others based on appearance be stopped, or is it an innate behavior that all human beings are born with? Additionally, how does this judgement affect the lives of both physically attractive and unattractive individuals? One major example of this is physical unattractiveness being a potential contributor to child abuse. As writer Joel Bakan says, “the child who is abused and neglected becomes ugly in appearance and invites further abuse and neglect” and “lack of physical attractiveness may play in the abuse process” (109). Furthermore, according to a study conducted by Central Michigan University, data supports hypotheses which suggest children who are perceived as unattractive are at a greater risk for maltreatment (“Physical Attractiveness” 349). Overall, it is clear that humans will never be able to prevent themselves from judging other individuals based on outward appearance. An attractive physical appearance can benefit you in many circumstances throughout your life including at work, in court or other situations including wrongdoings, and even in your relationship family. Likewise, an unattractive physical appearance can hurt you just the same. However, it is important that society begins to focus less on appearance of an individual and rather the character of the individual
