“Everybody feels like an outcast because the world is so large and every fingerprint is so vastly different from one another and yet all these standards and beliefs, and dogmatic systems of judgment and ranking in almost all the societies of the world” -Ezra Miller. All around us, cliches and standards are seen throughout culture. This is because judgment is a constant challenge in today's society. If one dress, acts or plays out of the considered normal, then those people are put into rankings and are distanced from everyone else. In today’s world, the experience of being an outcast is universal. To begin, how people view one's appearance can determine where they are ranked in the world. Trends start and end every season, and as soon as one person can no longer keep up with the trends, people start judging and unaccepting them. Every job has a different ranking attached to it. If one were to work at a fast food restaurant, they would be looked down upon if being compared to a doctor. Not only does the story ¨The Doll's House¨ by Katherine Mansfield show how one can be judged for appearance, but also how one can be judged for their financial state. Not only were they seen as a filthy family, but they were also seen as poor. The children were daughters of the washerwoman and a jailbird who hardly had enough money to put cloth on their children's back. ¨The truth was they were dressed in bits given to her by the people for whom she worked¨(Mansfield 203). This quote further shows how one's financial state can cause one to become an outcast due to the inability to relate to the rich man's ways.
