Most EU countries are located in the south-east part of EU
It can be important for EU countries to share borders since it will mostly force peace treaties between said countries because of how close they are to each other.
Some reason some countries might want to join the EU are for trade acts, since that can easily increase the economy of the country and other things such as peace treaties so the country doesn't have to live in fear of being taken over easily by its enemies.

I think the author's purpose is to show the amount of refugees fleeing to her country, i think her stance is against it as her perspective shows how she doesn't like it.
