People throw the words "anxiety" and depression around like a used napkin. They say it can cause "this and that". Well "this and that" sounds like Saturday morning cartoons to me now. I remember laughing at how silly everyone was. I'd watch how they all seemed so bored with school, and how they would ease their boredom away through intimate bonding with their alcoholic beverages and members of the opposite sex (for the most part). How could they be so busy all the time and still be okay? Some of them were juggling work, school, relationships, sports, parties and more. It just didn't make any sense. Weren't they afraid they would...faint? Ah yes, the fainting. That was one of the big ones. How is it that a normal teenage girl of proper health …show more content…
Thankfully, we have become more humane since then. We live in a world that has a lot more stress than previous generations. For one we have more people. It's getting harder to breath the same oxygen. So it should be no surprise to learn than anxiety is a lot more commonplace than it use to be. Either that or people are getting to be more comfortable talking about it. The reason I chose to wrote these articles about anxiety is that there is still a lot of information to be shared. The best source for it is from someone who has dealt with it and somewhat gotten better. If you have panic attacks or anxiety related disorder my first piece of advice is to see a doctor. You cannot handle this on your own. Trust me I know from some crippling attacks I've had, one during a job interview. Your doctor will be able to prescribe medication that will ease the jags, or the most violent parts of the episodes. Believe me it is easier to get through the gnawing sensation of a panic attack without having to deal with thinking about whether you are still breathing. As for medications, everybody is different. Which means that what works for me may not necessarily work for someone else. But again that is where a doctor has to be involved to find the combination of meds that works for a patient. Citalopram and Lisinopril are my cocktails of choice. Once you start taking these pills the first thing you will experience is an increase in the sensation of the panic attack. This can be a daunting price to pay but I assure you after a couple of weeks if you stay on the meds you will start to feel better. During the transition one thing I found that helped knock me out of a panic attack was aspirin. But my doctor said aspirin has also been known to aggravate symptoms in other patients so take my advice with a grain of salt. Most anxiety medications are going to cause your blood pressure to rise and that
Who here has heard someone use the term “Anxiety Attack”? Where they using the term loosely or do they actually know how an anxiety attack feels? Anxiety can be compared to a number of things; I however would like to compare it to my favorite candy: sour patch kids. Today, I am going to inform you on what anxiety is as well as the downsides and benefits of anxiety.
Are you or do you know someone, experiencing panic attacks or anxiety attacks? If so, it is important to be familiar with what these terms mean. Severe anxiety, which can be described as an episode of terror, is referred to as a panic attack. Panic attacks can be extremely frightening. People who experience panic attacks over a prolonged time period may become victims of agoraphobia, which is a psychiatric disorder that is closely associated with the panic disorder. Patients with Agoraphobia avoid certain places or situations such as airplanes, crowded theaters, a grocery store or anyplace from which escape might be difficult. It is said that Agoraphobia can be so severe that it has made certain individuals housebound.
Panic attacks can be a very debilitating disorder across many cultures, and there are many medical and psychotherapy treatments available that can help one cope and lessen the impact of fear is has on one’s life. Despite such treatments currently available, none can provide the freedom from fear that is found only in the presence of Jesus Christ.
Anxiety is a normal reaction to a threatening situation and results from an increase in the amount of adrenaline from the sympathetic nervous system. This increased adrenaline speeds the heart and respiration rate, raises blood pressure, and diverts blood flow to the muscles. These physical reactions are appropriate for escaping from danger but when they cause anxiety in many situations throughout the day, they may be detrimental to a normal lifestyle. An anxiety disorder is a disorder where feelings of fear, apprehension, or anxiety are disruptive or cause distortions in behavior, (Coon, 526); they are psychiatric illnesses that are not useful for normal functioning. At times, an underlying illness or disease can cause persistent anxiety. Treatment of the illness or disease will stop the anxiety. Anxiety illnesses affect more than 23 million Americans with about 10 million Americans suffering from the most common, general anxiety disorder . (Harvard, 1). Common anxiety disorders are panic attacks (panic disorder), phobias, and general anxiety disorder (GAD). Panic attacks Panic attacks can begin with a feeling of intense terror followed by physical symptoms of anxiety. A panic attack is characterized by unpredictable attacks of severe anxiety with symptoms not related to any particular situation. (Hale, 1886). The person experiencing the attack may not be aware of the cause. Symptoms include four or more of the following: pounding heart, difficulty breathing, dizziness, chest pain, shaking, sweating, choking, nausea, depersonalization, numbness, fear of dying, flushes, fear of going crazy. Heredity, metabolic factors, hyperventilation, and psychological factors may contribute to anxiety causing panic attacks.
A panic attack is an unexpected, strong experience of fear joined with an irresistible feeling of threat, escorted by physical symptoms of anxiety. A person with panic disorder may have frequent panic attacks and feel stern anxiety about having another attack (Rosemary Purcell, Paul Maruff, Michael Kyrios, and Christos Pantelis, Arch Gen Psychiatry 1998). The disorder characteristically begins in young adulthood, but older people and children can be involved. Characteristically, a first panic attack appears to come suddenly, occurring as a person is busy in some normal doings like driving a car or walking to work. Unexpectedly, the person is struck by a barrage of scary and painful symptoms. Initial panic attacks may occur when people are under considerable stress, from an excess of work, for instance, or from the loss of a family member or close friend. The attacks may also follow surgery, a severe accident, sickness, or childbirth. Extreme consumption of caffeine or use of cocaine or other refreshment drugs or medicines can also trigger panic attacks (Jeremy D. Coplan, Raymond Goetz, Donald F. Klein, Laszlo A. Papp, Abby J. Fyer, Michael R. Liebowitz, Sharon O. Davies, and Jack M. Gorman, Gen Psychiatry 1998). In panic disorder, panic attacks persist and the person fears having another attack. As noted earlier, this fear called anticipatory anxiety can be there most of the time and critically obstruct with the person's life even when a panic attack is not in development. People who develop these panic-induced phobias will be likely to keep away from situations that they fear will activate a panic attack, and their lives may be increasingly restricted thus. Many people with panic disorder stay powerfully worried about their...
There are several types of anxiety disorders. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) involves excessive worrying, nervousness and tension. With this disorder, there is a constant feeling of dread that shapes your entire life. GAD makes people worry excessively and the worrying is constant. These people feel as though their mind is on a nonstop running marathon and there is nothing they can do about it. To help treat GAD there are several self-help tips to follow. One can look at their worries in a new way and understand that worries are triggered and the blame cannot be put on anyone else. Another helpful tip is to relax. “As you strengthen your ability to relax, your nervous system will become less reactive and you’ll be less vulnerable to anxiety and stress. Over time, the relaxation response will come easier and easier, until it feels natural,” (Smith, Segal, and Segal). Meditation, ...
Medication can be used to temporarily control or reduce some of the symptoms of panic disorder. However, it doesn't treat or resolve the problem and as soon as you wean off the medications you'll fear having a panic attack again, and a panic attack will become more likely Medication can be useful in severe cases, but it should not be the only treatment used. The of medication that is use are Antidepressants, which take several weeks before they begin to work, so the patient will have to take the constantly. not just during a panic attack. Benzodiazepine is another type of medication. These are anti-anxiety drugs that work as soon as you take them. Taking them during a panic attack provides rapid relief of symptoms. But, benzodiazepines are highly addictive and have serious withdrawal symptom.
According to Sharp (2012), “anxiety disorders are the most widespread causes of distress among individuals seeking treatment from mental health services in the United States” (p359).
Fear is a human emotion that starts when a person is in danger of being harmed. Anxiety is a thought in the human mind where they think something might harm them. In George Orwell’s novel, 1984, the protagonist, Winston Smith, experiences these two issues over and over as he tries to understand the world of Oceania and the government rules as created by Big Brother. With the novel being separated into three sections, each with their different points, Winston moves from anxiety to fear, back to anxiety, moves to true fear, and finally to defeat.
The problem with treating an agoraphobia panic attack is that the only real way to overcome the attack is for the person to attempt to push their limits. This is the reason why many agoraphobics tend to get worse before they get better. It is easy for an agoraphobic to ignore their problem, since all they have to do is not travel beyond their limits but unfortunately while being easy to ignore, agoraphobia also tends to be the
Having the blues, feeling a little anxious, or getting stressed out from time to time is part of life. However too much stress or the feeling of being anxious constantly can affect the level of anxiety someone must deal with. Anxiety can affect a person’s self-achievement, education, and even creating/keeping relationship with family and friends. When untreated this disorder can become more severe causing depression, or even alcohol or drug dependency. The people who suffer from anxiety must deal with the stress and worry of everyday life, but to what extent does the amount of pressure a person face affect their increase chance of higher anxiety?
Panic disorder and generalized anxiety according to the DSM-IV-TR are classified as anxiety disorder. In this paper we will be discussing panic and generalized anxiety disorder looking into the different aspects such as contributing theories and what appropriate treatment can be use to help ease the symptoms of these disorders. According to the DSM-IV-TR panic disorder is a recurrent panic attack. It typically begins with the sudden onset of intense apprehension, fear, or terror. Panic disorder is a serious condition that strikes without reason or warning, for example they do not occur immediately before or on exposure to a situation that almost always causes anxiety. Therefore attacks can’t be predicted and may cause people to become stressed, anxious or worried wondering when the next panic attack will occur. Statistics show that 40% of all young adults have occasional panic attack, especially during times of intense stress, such as exam week.
