Mikhail “Michael” Aleksandrovich Chekhov was born on August 29th, 1891 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and he died at age sixty-four on September 30th, 1955 in Beverly Hills, California. He was known for his numerous talents, which included acting, directing, writing and for being a theatre practitioner. Chekhov cultivated a technique of acting that was, and still is, used by admired, award-winning actors and actresses. Some of his most well-known protégés include Clint Eastwood, Marilyn Monroe, Gregory Peck, and Yul Brynner. According to Powers’ Michael Chekhov on Theatre, theatre authority Konstantin Stanislavski once referred to Chekhov as his “most brilliant student.” It was not surprising that Michael Chekhov grew attached to the art of theatre and writing, as his uncle, Anton Chekhov, was a notable playwright. This likely served as a gateway into theatrical arts for young Michael, and he quickly made a name for himself in the theatre world, and especially so in his homeland of Russia.
Why does the world need to kill two million men just because two countries can’t agree with each other? War is devastating to countries and most indefinitely to individuals and soldiers. A war can ruin families, friendships, education, economy, and the minds of innocent people. Most young men, who were just approaching manhood, were pulled of their innocence of childhood, and thrown into a world of rage and destruction. Soldiers that luckily survive a horrific war often find their lives turned completely upside down since they enlisted, and sometimes it is just impossible to forget the vicious past and start over again as a civilian. Many older men believe that wars being fought are wars of dignity and glory, but truthfully, wars are battles of death and gore. The novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque expresses dramatically the negative effects of war.
The theme in a story is a message or lesson that the author wants the reader to take away when reading the story. These themes can teach the reader lessons, get points across or help them understand the book better. All Quiet On The Western Front displays the themes: the horrors and destruction of war and the effects on soldiers, sacrifice, loss of innocence, and friendship.

'This was no time to work' he'd said. 'A time for the troops to rally. A time for families and friends to unite, to band together, to comfort and support, to be there, to be with those who needed, when and as needed'!
Instead of Lina’s usual hatred towards Kretzsky, she shows sympathy once she learns more about him. In his time of weakness, Lina sees him more like a person rather than a soldier. Once Lina’s mother has passed, Lina is felt emotionally drained even more than she once was. While walking to find some wood to help them withstand the cool winter air, Lina sees a different Kretzsky than normal. He was full of sorrow. From the visible bottle in his hand, his drunken state was apparent.
. Indeed, she shows her interest in a specific time of the day punctuated by the tolling of the clock (Big Ben). The novel depicts the creative use of time. It starts in the morning of June 1923 and ends at 3 am. A day in the life of Clarissa, who is going to host a party and invite all of the characters to join. Within that day, she will reveal the inside thoughts of characters within a compressed amount of time. Memories of the characters take them back to a calm life before the war, to the lovely summer of Bourton, the great friendship with Peter and Sally. In the novel, Wool states “ I dig out beautiful caves behind my characters …the caves shall connect and each comes to daylight at the present moment” (Woolf 95). Like Bergson, she focused
According to the biography of Erich Maria Remarque on cliffsnotes.com, Erich is a German author who was called “ the recording angel of the Great War”. Once he became old enough Erich, then named Erich Paul Remark, was drafted in to the german army as a musketeer. After he completed his training he was transferred to Celle and there he could visit his mom who 9 months later would die from cancer. In 1918 Remarque was no longer in the army due to a medical discharge. Eleven years later in 1929, Erich wrote the war novel, “All Quiet on the Western Front”. Two & half million copies would sell in the first 18 months and today the book is published in 22 languages.
War can be very traumatizing to anyone who is involved in it so the toll it takes on the soldiers isn’t surprising. The people in Germany thought that fighting in the war was the best thing anyone could do for their country. However, they haven’t considered what it would actually be like. Since there’s so many soldiers, it’s hard to feed them all. Most times they only have a little bit of food to eat and they jump on the opportunity to have a larger share since some of them have died. In one of the scenes, Paul’s group was relaxing, something that rarely happens, and spotted a few geese. The group went wild trying to catch them because that meant they would’ve had a good dinner that night. Conditions in the trenches were bad as well. Some days were very cold and other days were the opposite. Lice was all around and the ground was always muddy. If civilians knew about these conditions, they wouldn’t glorify the war as much.
All Quiet on the Western Front is a 1929 novel written Paul joined the war after some intensive urging from the school master Kantorek. Kantorek was a fiercely patriotic man and he persuaded many of Pauls friends to enlist to prove their patriotism. While at war Kantorek writes them a letter to encourage them by calling them "Iron Youth" and praising them on their heroism. How is paul narrating the story? (what is he telling us a bad the war?) (Feelings, events) -examples to back up points Paul narrates the story how the war was not glamorous and how horrifying it was living the life of a soldier in World War I. The horrors of war had become so much of a normal routine that when almost half of his company was killed with the same detachment
returned since the end of the war. His view on London has drastically changed. “Those five year-1918 to 1923- had been, he suspected, somehow very important. People looked different. Newspapers seemed different” (Woolf, 80). Time had changed his perception of London, and the only thing he knew before was what his memories told him. “These references suggest that the class under examination in the novel is living on borrowed time” (Zwerdling, 70). Their values and memories of what London used to hold is no longer accurate. Unlike the rest of the story, these memories of what London used to be like, do not have any credibility. Time had changed the feelings and thoughts of the people, and so the characters must adapt, make new memories. “The
Though Anton Chekhov's "The Bet" was written in a different country at a different time, it portrays a timeless theme; greed is a crippling trait of mankind. This message can be seen through the author's use of characterization of both the lawyer and the banker. The banker was a static character; he was greedy from start to finish. The lawyer was a dynamic character and he saw the wrong in his ways and changed them in the end.
