In this Greek play, we learned about tragic heroes. As characters in the play conflict we find that the story and theme develops more. The character that contrasts the most with Creon is Antigone. We find that the major conflict in this play is that Antigone wishes to bury her brother, Polyneices, but Creon has decreed that anyone that buries him will be sentenced to death. As Antigone explains, “Anyone who acts against the order will be stoned to death before the city.” (Page 255 lines 43-44) They also have different moral values and religious beliefs. Creon believes that his decree is higher than that of the gods’ and Antigone believes the gods’ laws are higher than mans’. Creon does not respect women. In the first analysis, Antigone believes that the gods are all powerful where as Creon thinks he is more powerful than the gods. In the first scene, Antigone is talking to her sister, Ismene, about burying their brother, Polyneices.
