Parts Unknown: IOWA

If Anthony Bourdain was to visit Iowa, I would take him to a number of places that represent our culture and way of life. We would visit the Iowa State fair, Lake Okoboji, The Tulip Time Festival, The National Balloon Classic, and the Grotto of the Redemption. The State Fair shows off the large agriculture side of Iowa. Okoboji is a place many Iowans go to enjoy the water and family time. Tulip Time is a big tradition in southern Iowa that happens every year and celebrates the Dutch heritage. The National Balloon Classic is an event where nearly 100 hot air balloons are launched into the sky that people can ride in. The Grotto of the Redemption is a beautiful memorial that represents Iowa’s most common religion of Christianity.

This event takes place in late July and early August in Indianola, Iowa. Here, almost 100 hot air balloons fill the sky with a variety of bright colors, shapes, and sizes. Pilots fly these giants across the sky in competitions for points and prizes, but they offer rides to the public as well. I would certainly ask Bourdain if he was interested in taking a ride to see the great plains of Iowa from that high up. The balloons take flight at 6:30 A.M. and 6:30 P.M. each day, which opens up the afternoons for visitors to see what else the festival has to offer. Other forms of entertainment are also present at the balloon festival. Parades, firework shows, and live performances by rising artists and bands draw excited crowds throughout the week. Most of these performances The food served at this event is Iowa’s typical fair foods including jumbo corndogs, funnel cakes, fresh squeezed lemonade, cheese balls, and tenderloins. These foods are greasy and delicious, just how Iowa fair-goers like. The National Balloon Classic has a high rate of attendants each year and is a big tradition for the people of

Generally, when someone is said to be the “best” at something, it is an arbitrary title given to someone by another person based purely of of their own narrow viewpoint. This it true when talking about the best actor, however, there may be a way to determine the best actor on a variety of criteria. Though some may think otherwise, Danny DeVito is a phenomenal actor, who may be considered one of the best in the industry, from his range as an actor, to the sheer number of awards he has won or been nominated for, or even his projects outside of film, he seems to have it all compared to all other actors.
Mr. Allen also speaks in depth of the farmers. The Farmer’s Holiday occurred when Milo Reno organized Iowan farmers and got them to “refuse to bring food into Sioux City for thirty days, ‘or until the cost of production had been obtained” (86).
To describe the 1933 Chicago World's Fair in a word, one might choose, "modern" or "dazzling," perhaps even "outrageous." The fair experimented with modern architecture, dazzling electric illumination, and a daring color scheme meant to reflect the scientific content of the fair's exhibits. The fair featured advancements in all fields of science, ranging from the inner-workings of the automobile engine to the most recent theory on the structure of the atom. Entitled "The Century of Progress," it used these vivid colors and impressive exhibits to create a light-hearted and uplifting experience intended to distract the nation from the hardships of the Great Depression. The viewbook featured here provides visitors with a souvenir of this striking event and a way to remember the exhibits and buildings after the exhibition was over and the fairgrounds returned to a public park.
