In many totalitarian societies children are taken from their homes and put in military/government run quarters. In these societies children are taken from their parents because children are easily influenced and can be influenced in the “wrong way.”
Because of this children are removed from their homes and taken to government-controlled centers. Leaders want to make the kids perspective to their liking. Parents are considered unreliable by leaders because of what they believe. In Anthem, people are not allowed to know their parents; for all we know the saint of the pyre (a man executed for saying the forbidden word “I”) could be Equality’s father. The children in this book go to the home for students where they are taught, because they cannot think as freely as we do today. By being taught what society believes they are automatically conformed to the way the world wants them to be. In Anthem the peoples’ choices are taken from them. They don’t get a choice in their job or their name (Rand).
