Antecedents and Consequences of the Concept of Pain
Antecedents
The events that happen prior to concept taking place are known as antecedents (Walker & Avant, 1995). In the concept of pain, three main actions happen for pain to occur. First, an internal or external noxious stimuli is received. This stimuli travels to the brain through the peripheral nerve system (Brunner, et al., 2010, p. 234). Second, the individual must become aware of the stimuli. Lastly, the stimuli must be perceived as painful. Each person will respond differently to the pain experience. Therefore, the individual’s attitudes, personal experiences and knowledge are also antecedents to the concept of pain. For instance, a person that has been exposed to severe pain knows the

Oscar’s mother states that she found him bleeding on the bathroom. Oscar states that he did not try to kill himself. Oscar’ mother admits that he had seen a psychiatrist in the past due to his self-mutilating behavior. Upon assessment the nurse notices multiple scars from previous cuttings from his wrist up to the elbows. Oscar has two new lacerations that need repair. Oscar admits that he cut himself. He says that he feels pleasure and relaxation when he does it. Oscar state that he did not want to cut himself so deep. He says that everything is a misunderstanding. This case is contrary to the concept of pain. Two of the main recurring themes of pain, which are unpleasantness and illness, are not present. Oscar is feeling pleasure that is the opposite of pain. The noxious stimuli coming from the tissue damage is not perceived as negative. Pain is a feeling that is avoided by those experiencing. On this case, Oscar is looking for that experience because it is perceived as positive. Some of the concepts associated with pain may or may not be present. For instance, Oscar could be feeling anxious about the situation.

The human body has developed a pain response in order to avoid injury. For example, if an individual were to place their hand on a hot oven, the excruciating pain would signal the nervous system to move the hand immediately before experiencing irreversible damage.

Pain and suffering is something that we all would like to never experience in life, but is something that is inevitable. “Why is there pain and suffering in the world?” is a question that haunts humanity. Mother Teresa once said that, “Suffering is a gift of God.” Nevertheless, we would all like to go without it. In the clinical setting, pain and suffering are two words that are used in conjunction.
A crucial concept in the definition of pain is that it is indeed a perception, therefore involving the brain's rumination and elaboration on corresponding input. This may be paralleled to another sensory perception, vision. Although the optic nerve head should cause a "hole" in an individual's...
middle of paper ... ... Being free of pain is something that we feel within us to be intrinsically joyful, and no reason can be used to explain further why we wish to be joyful, or in good health. These things we just sense, and even a murderer, who rejects morality on the social level, will do whatever he can to avoid the displeasures of his inner being. His sentiments, if only for himself, remain within him. “One thing can always be a reason, why another is desired.
Many doctors, therapists, and other health care providers never hear about this concept during their medical training, as this is not part of their treatment protocol. However, becoming aware of your body and the sensations you experience within your body and on your skin is the key to solving many health problems, including physical pain. It was a major key to Cornelia's physical healing process eighteen years ago and key in Janet's healing from early life trauma.
People can wear pain on the outside like a mask, hiding them from the world, but it also can hide deep within them waiting to be freed by some emotional circumstance. Oddly enough, pain is one on the most feared apprehensions in the mind of humans, yet in some situations, is the most rejoiced. In this paper I will take a close look at pain, from it's true meaning to real life occurrences in which pain is a reality. We all know what pain feels like, for everyone has experienced it at one time in their lives. There are two dimensions of pain; the physical and the emotional pain. Physical pain is a sensation of pure discomfort. For example, when you are walking through your house and stump your toe on a table leg, you don't just stand there and say, "That hurt."
