Ten year old Annie John who grew up and lived in Antigua, goes on an internal journey to develop from a little naive girl to a women overcoming various obstacles. She tries being more comfortable with her mother and creating a closer bond despite the big age gap between her and her mother. The story she wrote and presented in class about her mother swimming and drawing patterns on a rock far from the shore. The story shows a common aspect of childhood; the parents are greatly relied on. The day will come when the mother has to leave with all of her teaching and the child has to face reality. Annie’s sentiment changes as she grows up and develops into an independent woman. The novel reflects this change through symbolism representing Annie’s development from a child to an independent woman.
It was the first day of a new term in Annie's school and her class was assigned what Miss Nelson calls a autobiographical essay. As Annie listen to the story of her classmates she realizes her essay was different from the other , as she mentions " i began to wonder about what I had wetter for it was the opposite of playful and it was the opposite of imaginative" ( page 41 . Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid). Her story's heartfelt until the last part. In Annie's autobiographical essay Annie and her Mother goes to Rat island Sunday after churn to bathe in the sea. The Sea is a remedy recommended to strengthen her weak lunges . They would bathe without swimming apparel becuase it was a medicine rather than afrom of enjoyment. Her was a mother superior Swimmer, however Annie was intimidated by the water and would think she's drowning despite the water only going up to get knees. Only way for her to get in the water was if she was on her mother's back....

The first two marbles Annie received was from oats her mother came across. These two marbles and the rest of the marbles Annie gathers from the kids at school represent the new world she creates but a world her mother is not fond of. Annie world changes as she spends time with the Red Girl who got her into playing marbles. The marbles gives a different opinion on the world and sees the world beyond her mother and teacher outlines. Playing marbles opened the door to another world, a world he mother doesn't want her to have.
Jamaica Kincaid uses many symbolism that shows how Annie develops from a little girl that very dependent on her mother to a independent woman who makes decision on her own. Throughout the book she learns to accept changes, which she was afraid of In the beginning of the book.
