Anna Pavlova was a famous Russian ballerina of the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. After making a company debut, she eventually became a head dancer of the Ballet Russe. The years following, she established her own company. Anna performed all over the world and is well-known for her main role, “The Dying Swan”.
Anna was born on February 12, 1881 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Anna’s mother, Lyubov Feodorovna, was a washerwoman, and her stepfather, Matvey Pavlov, was a reserve soldier. We do not know who Anna’s biological father is, it still remains a mystery.
Although Anna’s family was poor, her mother took her to see “Sleeping Beauty” at the local theatre, the Mariinsky theatre. Anna, eight years old at the time, was amazed and inspired to become a dancer. Anna decided to pursue her dream and enrolled in St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet School. She went on her first tour in 1907 with many other talented dancers. She performed in the capital cities in Europe and gained a lot of attention. She took on another tour and after finishing it, she was asked to unite with Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russe on tour. Anna did not stay with Ballet Russe for very long because Sergei Diaghilev preferred male dancers.
In 1911, Anna established her own ballet company and traveled all around the world, being the first to do so. She traveled about 400,000 miles on her tours. In 1910, during her tour, she made a journey to America where she appeared at the Metropolitan Opera House for the first time. One our of the multiple countries she danced at, Australia. After dancing at Australia, she is believed to have shaped their culture of dance.
Anna mixed in many different cultures in with her dancing. Anna performed classical ballets on her tours such as, “Giselle” and “Sleeping beauty.” She also showed “Bacchanale” which was a popular duet she created with Mikhail
