Animal testing has been around since early centuries. Mice, rabbits, monkeys, and other animals are forced to endure pain of having caustic chemicals forced onto their skin, eyes, and other parts of their bodies. Although animal testing can have its benefits, it also involves hurting and killing innocent animals and exploiting what the public has yet to find will put an end to all the testing and torturing of these poor, innocent animals. Animal testing is used for experimental studies to help further medical research for the human body. “Many animals, especial the higher mammalian species, possess internal systems and organs that are identical to the structures and functions of human internal organs” (Dunnuck). Billions of the United States taxpayer dollars are wasted on cruel and inhumane experiments on animals annually (“It 's Tax Season…”). The National Institute of Health allocates for almost forty percent of their research budget to animal experiments, their data for the 2014 budget states that more than $12 billion in taxpayer money goes to the experiments (“It 's Tax Season…”). There are also many universities that play a role in animal testing. “Northeastern University spent $300,000 injecting hamsters with steroids and forcing them to fight” (“It 's Tax Season…”). “The University of Utah spent $500,000 inducing heart attacks in dogs” (“It 's Tax Season…”). “Oregon Health and Science University spend $1.6 million turning mice and monkeys into alcoholics” (“It 's Tax Season…”). Lastly, “The National Institute of Health spends $1.7 million inducing depression in baby monkeys” (“It 's Tax Season…”). These poor, innocent animals are treated as if they are prisoners even though they haven 't committed a crime. “They don 't know if they will be dragged from their prison cells for an injections, blood withdrawal , a painful procedure, surgery, or death” (“Cruelty to Animals...”). “Animals are infected with diseases that they would never normally contract, tiny mice grew tumors as larvae as their own bodies, kittens are purposely blinded, rats are made to suffer seizures, and primates’ skulls are cut open and electrodes are implanted in them” (“Cruelty to Animals…”). “Experimenters force-feed chemicals to animals, conduct repeated surgeries on them, implant wires in their brains, crush their spines, and much more” (“Cruelty to Animals…”). After going through these scary and painful procedures, these innocent animals are dumped back into their prison cells without any painkillers (“Cruelty to Animal…”). With having the knowledge of what these poor animals go through, our society should try and help protect these animals from the torture of animal
