In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the pig Napoleon uses specific tactics to gain power and control over the animal farm. Some of these techniques include controlling information through education, scapegoating, use of fear, swaying public opinion and blind obedience.
Throughout the novel, the most prominent way that Napoleon gained power was through controlling the education that the animals received. In the beginning of the novel, Snowball believes in educating all of the animals on Animal Farm, young and old, by trying to organize committees and instituting classes devoted to reading and writing (page 39). However, Napoleon openly states that educating the young is more important that the old. When Jessie and Bluebell have puppies, Napoleon takes them away and secludes them from the rest of Animal Farm to teach them on his own (41). Throughout the novel, after Snowball's removal, education becomes less and less important, and pigs and dogs are the only animals really being taught anything. This comes in handy for Napoleon as he begins to make "adjustments" to the rules that Animal Farm is based upon, such as drinking alcohol, sleeping in beds, and walking on two legs. The fact that the animals can't do math is an advantage as well when Squealer starts reeling off facts and figures about rations and death rates and other nonsense (105).
Another technique Napoleon takes advantage of is scapegoat...
But here, joy doesn’t come from idealized images but rather musical symbols and sounds. As one listens to music for instance, the person gets “outside of” herself and her pleasure comes from becoming one with nature. Furthermore, the reunion of man and man is reaffirmed. For instance, people at a concert have a feeling of unity as they are all listening to the same music and experiencing the same feeling. Music and dance transform the consciousness of the individual who is immersed in them and the feeling of separation is lost. Nietzsche describes music symbols as resembling the ecstatic state of mind that they suggest, these symbols transfigure and sweeten reality. So, dionysian music symbols don’t necessarily represent one specific thought or emotion. Thus, while listening to music, the world is transfigured into an aesthetically pleasing world, and thereby makes life possible and worth living. But much like apollonian art, diosynian art involves an illusion and once the music stops, we return to the ugly reality and there is a danger of letdown when the dionysian experience is
In our current culture, there is a huge difference between what is considered to be for girls or boys. From birth, children are told what colors and styles of clothing they wear, what toys they should play with, and how they should act. Often, girls are told they cannot play with toys considered to be for boys and boys are told they are not allowed to play with toys considered to be for girls. Children who do decide they want to play with the toys not traditionally for their gender are often scolded by family members, pushing the children back to their gender-specific toys. Gender socialization starts at birth and continues from adolescence, to adulthood, causing specific and detrimental differences

Overall Nietzsche is successful at responding to Schopenhauer’s philosophy as his work in Birth of Tragedy, in introducing the Apollonian and Dionysian, echoes and coincides with Schopenhauer’s ideas. Schopenhauer claims that knowledge and art are the way to escape the will, suffering, and Nietzsche seems to describe the process of doing that by defining art and its connections to knowledge. Those who disagree that Nietzsche is successful might say that him defining art for Schopenhauer is going too far. One cannot deny that there may be different paths to achieving perfect knowledge and contemplation, however, within the generality of Schopenhauer saying that art and knowledge are the ways to escape suffering, Nietzsche successfully created a definition for art and a valid argument that stays within the parameters of Schopenhauer’s philosophy.
Orwell uses words to demonstrate that language can be deceptive, powerful, and manipulative. A farm is brought up, where the social order has been corrupt by the superior class of the pigs. The major difference between the pigs and other animals is that pigs can fluently use language and other animals cannot. Orwell introduces the plot of the pigs’ politics being corrupt due to greed and intense pride of their species. The pigs seek to make use of other animals’ underdeveloped linguistic skills and ignorance. Horses, goats, sheep and other animals have been assigned enormous amount of work by the pigs to cultivate the farm and build a windmill. The pigs call themselves brain workers and do not take part in work that involves physical movement. They easily convince other animals into thinking that this is the reason why Jones is not coming back. In this deceiving manner of using words, the pigs have ascended to the leading class of this “society” while the other animals resulted in belonging to the “working class”. Also, the book constantly mentions how powerful language can be. Napoleon’s unique diction that carries an intimidating and admonishing effect causes the animals to have an unconditional belief in him. Orwell purposely exemplifies a society within a fable to effectively note these three aspects of deception, power, and manipulation and to emphasize that one’s mastery of language is crucial in order not to be tricked and manipulated by the words of the elite class who were given proper education.
The agenda for the animals in the movie Manor Animals Farm was to be free and to role themselves. They set a list of goal or rules that every animal had to follow. The leader pig got all the animals excited and committed in the goals that were set. The animals called a meeting so that the rules could be made and made official. They all came together to brainstorm ideas about the laws that the pig listed. These steps were taken in the farm to select the rules first before enforcing them. This is the first step to planning an agenda.

Napoleon also uses manipulation to gain and maintain firm control by changing the Commandments for the farm in ways that work to his benefit. Squealer, Napoleon’s propaganda department, keeps the farm animals believing in Napoleon by describing what they hear and see to make it seem harmless. Using effective tactics of fear, convincing propaganda, and manipulation, Napoleon gains and maintains control of Animal Farm. First, Napoleon uses the nine dogs that he raises to gain control of the farm and then to frighten the farm animals into accepting everything he does so that Napoleon is able to maintain control. When Napoleon introduces the dogs to the rest of the animals, the animals are speechless.
Animalism Vs. Marxism Characters, items, and events found in George Orwells book, Animal Farm, can be compared to similar characters, items, and events found in Marxism and the 1917 Russian Revolution. This comparison will be shown by using the symbolism that is in the book with similarities found in the Russian Revolution. Old Major was a prized-boar that belonged to Farmer Jones. The fact that Old Major is himself a boar was to signify that radical change and revolution are, themselves, boring in the eyes of the proletariat (represented by the other barnyard animals), who are more prone to worrying about work and survival in their everyday life.
Lord Acton, the British historian once said, “Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.” In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the author gives many examples of how power is used to manipulate and produce fear. In this book the main character, Napoleon, became a master of using various tactics to gain and maintain power over the rest of the animals. Napoleon used propaganda, manipulation and fear to gain more loyalty and power throughout the farm.
Autocratic leadership theory is a part of the behavioural approach. In this leadership theory, leader makes all decisions and uses power to command and control the followers to achieve goal. According to Lewin(1939), “autocratic leaders are associated with high-performing groups, but that close supervision is necessary and feeling of hostility are often present” (p.173). It is incredibly efficient and tasks are completed quickly. Autocratic leadership can be beneficial when decisions need to be making quickly. For example, in emergency situation surgeon uses this theory because the patient’s situation is between life and death and there is no time to discuss with other members. Bass (2008) mentioned in the Leadership styles and theories article, “Autocratic leaders can be effective because they create good structure, and determine what needs to be done. They provide rewards for compliance, but punish disobedience” (Giltinane, 2013, p. 35-37).
Animal Farm In the book, Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, the animals are raised in rebellion against their human masters in hope for a better life. However, the quote by Lord Acton, a British historian, describes it best: "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. " This is basically what happens. The pigs realize their intellectual superiority, and use it to their advantage.
The novel Animal Farm by George Orwell was a very interesting, complex, and informing novel. In the novel, George Orwell uses farm animals to portray people of power and the common people during the Russian Revolution. The novel starts off with Major explaining to all the animals in the farm how they are being treated wrongly and how they can over throw their owner, Mr. Jones. They finally gang up on their owner and he leaves the farm.
On Animal Farm, terror was used to a great extent towards the animals to get to obey and stay loyal to Napoleon. Misleading information known as propaganda was greatly used by Squealer and Napoleon to make the animals think of Napoleon as a brave and heroic leader. The violations done to the constitution by the pigs to accommodate their actions was another reason as to why Animal Farm became a totalitarian state once again. Napoleon uses all of these methods to ensure his power as a dictator on Animal Farm. The animals started off with the hope of them no longer being controlled by someone, but by allowing Napoleon to take control, everything went back to the way it originally was. With one in control of
In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, a main theme is that power corrupts those who possess it. A definition of corruption is,“dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.” Orwell develops this idea through the character Napoleon in various ways. Looking back in the book, the animal’s rebellion quickly turned political and revolved around, “Leader, Comrade Napoleon (Orwell 81)”. The power Napoleon possed was executed through lies and selfishness, aided by the lack of intellectual ability in the other animals. The corruption of Napoleon’s power is displayed when he favors himself, along with the other pigs, and eventually the dogs, who all get better rations of food compared to the other animals. Another main demonstration of how power corrupts Napoleon is how he separates himself from the other animals on the farm, displaying his feelings if superiority to the other animals. A ceremonial nature develops towards Napoleon. The last way power corrupts Napoleon is how he acts recklessly; killing other animals and lying about
