In George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm, Old Major is a better persuasive speaker than Squealer because he is truthful, has all of the animals’ welfare in mind, and wants to be an inspiration for the animals. Old Major gave a speech because he knew he was going to die soon and wanted to share his wisdom with the animals before he passed away. He did this because he was not selfish and wanted to give the animals something to aspire to that he had learned from his childhood. He wanted the animals to know the truth without manipulating the facts and only telling the truth “Man is the only creature that consumes without producing.”(Orwell, 4) In contrast, Squealer manipulates facts to persuade the animals and makes them think that they are stupid. In chapter, squealer adds “with sheets.”(Orwell, 43) to the end of “No animal shall sleep in a bed.”(Orwell, 15).He does this to accommodate the pigs that know live in the farmhouse.
