Anesthesia means “loss of sensation” in Greek. Caused by drugs, it is a state of severe central nervous system depression that causes relaxation, reflex loss, and loss of pain in all or part of the body. It is used in many different medical procedures from stitching a cut to heart surgery. It relieves pain, reduces anxiety, and paralyzes muscles.
An anesthesiologist administers the anesthetic agents, or drugs that cause anesthesia, and monitors the patient. An anesthetic drug is usually administered through an IV or by inhalation through a mask. The type of drug given depends on the patient’s medical history, allergies to medications, results of tests and physical exam, and the type of procedure.
Side effects and complications of anesthesia include nausea and vomiting, having an allergic reaction to the anesthetic agents, respiratory complications that are caused by vomiting or from the administration of too many anesthetic agents, hypothermia, and malignant hypothermia.
Local anesthesia, one of the three types of anesthesia, is used for simple procedures like sewing up a cut or removing dead or damaged skin. It is used when a small area of the body needs to be insensitive to pain to preform the procedure.
One way of administering this type of anesthesia is by a shot. Usually, a small needle is used, but larger needles are also used to relieve the pain for deeper tissues. The first local anesthetic was cocaine, but now they usually use drugs like lidocaine, novocaine, and tetracaine. These types of drugs are vasodilators, which means they widen the blood cells and can cause excessive bleeding. They also cause the drug to be rapidly absorbed which can cause people to have seizures. Therefore, a drug...

They have shallow breaths, weak pulse, and widely dilated pupils that don’t contract with light. Signs of cyanosis, or lack of oxygen that is indicated by their hands and feet turning purple, may lead to death. If stage four happens, the anesthetic is discontinued, breathing and circulatory is put in place, and stimulants may be administered.
The three types of anesthesia are local, regional, and general. Local anesthesia is used for a small area of the body, such as a patch of skin. Regional anesthesia is used for a larger area of the body, such as the legs. General anesthesia is used for the whole body by making you go to sleep and stay asleep until the procedure is done.
