Andrew Jackson was a symbol for his era by being just an average man. He symbolized the era of the common man. He was the symbol that proved that America was not only a place for the elite. Jackson was also a break from the past presidencies because he was not born and raised as an elite member of society. Unlike previous president he was more concerned with improving the economy and the lives of the minority than by lining his own pockets.
Starting out as the lowest of the low Andrew Jackson rose to power through hard work and courage. He worked his way through life by joining the army, becoming a general and later gaining fame through becoming a military hero. Andrew Jackson continued to prove that he was just a regular man. Throughout his presidency Jackson believed that “ in all his warfare he had fought and won, not for himself, but for the people”.* A lot of popularity was gained throughout Jackson’s presidency because of his willingness to do what the people wanted but also what was best for the minority.
Although president Andrew Jackson was a man of the people he was also arrogant and forceful as president. “ His most striking character traits were an indomitable will, an intolerance of opposition, and a prickly pride that would not permit him to forgive or forget an insult or supposed act of betrayal”,* because of this Jackson had no fear in dueling those who he saw as a threat. His short temper and often violent actions reinforced his connection to the people, showing that he lacked the cool calm composer most politicians
