Anatomical and Physiological aspects of my PPP

The four ’S’ components and how they are involved in my activity of a

football pass:

1. Speed – speed is basically how fast you can move part of your

body or the whole of your body, and is measured in metres per

second. Speed is an important factor in all explosive sports and

activities that require sudden changes in pace (remember that

power is work performed per unit of time). How fast you are

depends on the percentage of fast glycolytic fibres in particular

muscle groups as these fibres receive stimuli quicker and release

energy anaerobically. You need fast reactions to be able to

respond to the right cue and also need to be able to select the

necessary motor units. Increased speed doesn’t always result in

improved performance if you go to quickly and make mistakes. With

relation a football pass at first speed doesn’t appear to be to

important but when the pass is added to a game situation and you

are under pressure the speed of your decisions and speed of pass

will determine if you get tackled or not.

2. Strength – this can be further subdivided into; Dynamic strength

and Endurance strength. Dynamic strength; the ability of the

neuromuscular system to overcome resistance with a high speed of

contraction is the dynamic strength. This aspect of strength is

more appropriate to sport than to general high-related fitness.

Dynamic strength is essential for any activities involving

sprinting, throwing, jumping or hitting and an athlete needs a

high percentage of fast glycolytic muscle fibres to perform well.
