The relationship between adolescents’ sleep and their academic performances or other health behaviors has long been a research project for scientists worldwide. In the readings provided, three out of four group of scientists conducted researches on how sleep duration and/or quality affects students school performances, and the other group investigated mainly on adolescents’ health behaviors, the use of marijuana for instance.
Findings concerning the relationships between sleep and academic performance:
While in both essays Sleep Duration and Cognitive Performance in Adolescence and Understanding Adolescents’ Sleep Pattern and School Performance: a Critical Appraisal, researchers have ended up with statements that confirm the positive relationship between sleep and academic performance, though the latter with part disagreement, in another essay Association of Sleep and Academic Performance, the findings were different. The research shows that the amount of sleep has no apparent effect on the students’ academic performances.
As is indicated in the essay Understanding Adolescents ’ Sleep Pattern and School Performance: a Critical Appraisal, self-reported shortened total sleep time, erratic sleep/wake schedules, late bed and rise times, and poor sleep quality are negatively associated with academic performance for adolescents from middle school through the college years. In this research, not only adolescents, but also pre-adolescents and freshman students in college were involved. After investigating the students’ detailed sleep habits, this research, along with several other researches worldwide, ended up in the same result as described above.

In The Spread of Sleep Loss Influences Drug Use in Adolescent Social Networks, scientists collected data over a period of time and built up social networks of the students.
In conclusion, the four researches used similar but various methods to study on the associations between adolescents’ sleep and academic performances or substance abusing, resulted in overlapping or contradictory conclusions.

The article, Today’s Exhausted Superkids, makes several valid points about the teenage generation lacking sleep each night. According to Frank Bruni, the reason for this is caused by cell phones, social media, schoolwork, and friends. I agree very much with this article because I can relate to it. I completely agree school work and cell phones have a major impact on the amount of sleep teenagers get.

In her essay, “Schools Awaken to Teens’ Sleep Needs,” implies students are impaired by their lack of sleep. Manning’s purpose is to convey the idea that it is a necessity for schools to look into starting school later due to the effects of sleep deficiency on children and their school work. She adopts an urgent tone in order to grab the support of her adult readers. Manning made this essay very effective through pathos, ethos, diction and syntax.
Another reason that causes the negative relationship between sleep deprivation and academic performance is the impact of high-stress level that is caused by sleep deprivation. People develop poor sleeping habits simply because they underestimate the importance of sleep. Education plays a huge role in determining an individual’s ideology on whether or not they need sleep. “In the Journal of School Health in 2009, we discovered that students know what to do and how to do it, in regards to getting an adequate amount of sleep. However they still practice risky behaviors. Sleep is a reversible, repetitive, and active behavior which plays different roles. These roles include restoration processes, memory consolidation, learning or growth. As argued out by Curcio, Ferrara and De Gennaro (2006), during sleep, neuro-cognitive, psychological, as well as behavioral processes take place. Many individuals sacrifice their sleep with an aim of carrying out extra activities. However, sleep loss has been found to have various negative effects. Some of these effects include impairment in psychomotor, neurocognitive performances, and sleepiness (Curcio et al., 2006). Results from recent studies have demonstrated that sleep plays an integral role in memory consideration and learning processes (Deregnaucourt et al., 2005 & Curcio et al., 2006).
