Success and it’s many virtues could change based on race, economic background, chance, talent, country of origin and many other variables. People often have to make sacrifices, often have doubts and are regularly pushed into difficult circumstances on their own course to success. Sacrifices are generally a given with great successes. The tremendous successes often come with equally as tremendous sacrifices. In the book The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, the lead character Tom makes quite the considerable sacrifice. Tom abandons his family without a source of income for them to keep their lights on and live. He does this in pursuit of a life of adventure and excitement. “I descended the steps of this fire escape for a last time and followed, from then on, in my father’s footsteps attempting to find in motion what was lost in space.” (Williams 97) He expresses some remorse as a result of this. He believes that his mother and sisters spirits follow him wherever he goes. “Then all at once, my sister touches my shoulder. I turn around and look into her eyes. Oh Laura, Laura, I tried to leave you behind me, but I am more faithful than I intended to be! I reach for a cigarette, I cross the street, I run into the movies or a bar, I buy a drink, I speak to the nearest stranger - anything that can blow your candle out.” (Williams 97) He is ultimately haunted by his choice to abandon his family. Although Tom is successful in his escape to a life of adventure he is wrought with guilt because of it and it haunts him, even in his new life. Another great difficulty in achieving success is doubt. The doubt a person has on whether they can accomplish a task can stop a person's success dead in its tracks. In Ayn Rand’s Anthem, the lead character Equality 7-2521 expresses doubt considering the cavern him and his friend have stumbled upon. Equality and his friend ‘International 4-8818’ have doubts on whether they should inform the council of scholars of the cave that they had recently discovered. “”International 4-8818,” we asked, “will you report
Generally speaking, success isn’t just about what you accomplish in life, it’s how you accomplished it and the impact you
Success has a different meaning for every person on Earth. The majority of people define success as an individual’s “attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence” (Success). In accordance with the rest of society, Malcolm Gladwell defines success as an individual’s accumulation of “a predictable and powerful set of circumstances and opportunities” given by the environment to help a person succeed in the business world (Gladwell 155). Advantages come in the forms of birth dates, learning styles, work ethics, demographic luck, and job needs. Similarly, opportunities given by the environment circulate around a person’s ability to complete “ten thousand hours… of greatness” (41). Before reading Gladwell’s book “Outliers: The Story of Success”, I would have complied with society’s and Gladwell’s
Success is a very personalized term. It can be defined in many different ways and like itself there are also many ways to achieve it. Success is a term that everyone has a different opinion on but one thing remains the same: we all want to be successful. We all want to be good at the things we desire most. Two great activists for the cause of success are Arnold Schwarzenegger and Greg Plitt. Both are men who demand great respect. Not only for being at the top of their classes but for also going beyond that and topping many of the ranks for things they are passionate about. Their success not only was noticed but radiated into the minds of people and children everywhere inspiring them to be great. Though they may have their differences both men
´´ If one advances confident in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. ’’ These words were spoken by Henry David Thoreau.Success is within the mind of the individual. A large portion of one´s life is spent working to become successful. People are told throughout childhood to work hard so they can grow up and achieve all of their dreams. But success takes many different forms. Different people have different interpretations of what success means to them. It does not matter how related they are to each other in certain áreas they always have a different point of view of what success really is. For some success is measured by social status and wealth
There are various definitions of success. It can be defined as the as one’s accomplishment of a desired aim or goals. Subsequently, success can also be defined as the attainment of wealth, position or honors. Therefore, success varies from one person to another; it can be a personal aspect as having a pregnancy, academic success, business or political success. However, for one to attain success, whether in an academic, business, political or a private setting, one must put in place strategies that will aid him or her and act as a bridge towards the accomplishment of success. A good strategy must give an overall direction of the intended goals, it is within the sources and opportunities of the desired goal and it advances
Throughout our lives we all experience a variety of things that help us define what success means to us. Some people look at success in a materialistic sense, while others take a more spiritual approach. Regardless of the way we view success or the factors that influence that view, we each have our own very unique Personal Philosophy on the subject. Personally, my philosophy is that the implementation of success strategies is key to achieving what one chooses to define as success. I have found that the three most effective success strategies I can use for years to come are being a critical thinker, improving concentration, and being an active listener. All three of these strategies are very practical and relevant to both my educational and professional pursuits, and therefore have proven to be the most effective in regards to my Personal Philosophy of Success.
Success is, in many ways, a branch of perspective, and yet societal norms seem to dictate what many view as success. Through my personal experience, and through the reading of Frederick Douglas I believe that the idea of personal success, in correlation with perspective, is a subject worthy of debate. Dissecting the difference of what many view as success and what may actually be success is essential for growth personally, and for people collectively. For example; currently many in our society view triumph as the acquisition of a copious monetary status, usually preceded, or followed by recognition for actions, ideas, etc… whether or not one views these actions or ideas worthy of widespread recognition. Nevertheless I myself believe that
Success means to live a life in alignment with what brings us real joy. In my case, “success-joy” comes in many guises. At times, in being persistent with my current dreams, others, investing time and energy in what makes my life shine, and that is, without a doubt, when my life is at service of humanity and when I cultivate happy and healthy close relationships. I tend to define success as a state of being, a constant process of unfolding rather than a place to arrive. It is the journey of getting to know ourselves, in order to fully occupy every aspect of what we are; a forever changing aspiration, a state of being in which we realize that life’s greatest rewards spring from our capacity to relate to adversity in innovative ways. I have also discovered that real success shows up again when we debunk and deconstruct every single stereotype and assumption we have about ourselves. In this way, we feel capable to challenge what is commonly accepted as wisdom and then we have the opportunity to change and integrate our values with greater ones. There is an enormous joy when we feel free to play with the possible new scenarios that our imagination and creativity compelled us to try. A successful state of being is alert and grounded within us with the certainty, that the choices we embark on are in resonance with what we consider is the truth of what we are in that precise
Success is hard to pin down. It may be getting an A on a test or finding a high paying job or creating your most influential piece of writing or even just being able to be yourself. Success is different to everyone. Success follows no arbitrary rules of definition or singularity, success is just what is important to you and what what makes you happy. Success controls people’s lives. It is the single most driving force in all of history, the will to be successful. Without our preconceived notions of success and what it means to be successful, no one would follow rules, everyone would follow their own.
What is success and who warrants it? Is it simply the accomplishments of a goal or a purpose? Perhaps it’s measured with being happy, productive, healthy or wise. Success seems to include an assortment of variables and often changes in accordance with life’s cycles. Regarding business, an accurate assessment of success is linked to
There is no concrete definition for success, and there is not a foolproof way to obtain it, but it is something many strive for. In Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell explains, with examples of successful people throughout history, that hard work along with a little bit of luck and willingness to seize every opportunity is the only way to become successful. Malcolm Gladwell illustrates throughout the story external factors that are mostly uncontrollable and internal factors like hard work that are very controllable lead to these outliers and unimaginable success stories.
There are several different types success, personal success is to be able to enjoy life in a way that person decides, and to not let others choose how they live their life. This quote by Christopher Morley describes what is really meant by personal success. Personal success has to do with being happy with one’s self. One can only be truly happy if they are happy and secure with themselves. Personal success is a quality that a person has when they are happy with who they are and is not being afraid of what others think of them. It is about not letting others dictate the way others chooses to life or make someone feel that they have to change what they are as a person. It is about gaining self-confidence and maintaining it. It is about being able to draw strength, and not needing affirmation from anyone. It is about being able to stay happy, even on the days when the phone doesn 't ring. Personal success is also about others setting goals for themselves and reaching them through hard work, dedication and sacrifice. Achieving personal success is the only way to achieve real happiness and peace with you. Personal success is when someone is liking and accepting who they are. This is the most important level of success. Without this kind of success and self-acceptance it would be hard to succeed in other aspects of
When it comes to the topic of success, most of us will readily agree that there are various ways to define success. Whereas this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of what factors most determine success. Whereas some are convinced that “The Triple Package” is essential, others maintain that there are many factors that determine success. Malcolm Gladwell states numerous examples of what can bring on success. Some of these factors are culture, luck, and practice. Another point of view is in his book “Outliers,” Gladwell writes “When outliers become outliers it is not because of their own efforts. It’s because of the contributions of lots of different people and lots of different circumstances, and that means we, as a society, have more control about who succeeds - and how many of us succeed – than we think.” (pg. 7-8; Reading Group Guide) is what composes long-term success. I personally believe that success is brought upon by culture, luck, and hard work.
Success can mean so many different things to so many different people. For someone, success can mean being rich. For another, success can mean being educated. Many people have different ideas of success. Where, however, can success be found? Can you just wake up one morning and already be successful? The harsh truth, is no. You can’t just wake up successful. You have to actually work hard (which some people in our generation don’t understand). Where and how can someone work to be successful? What are the steps a person in this generation can take, in order to be successful in the future? One thing’s for sure, success cannot be found while sitting on your couch, scrolling through Facebook… sorry.
