A Worn Path Analysis
A Worn Path is a short story written by Eudora Welty a native of Mississippi who wrote extensively about the Natchez Trace. It is a tale of struggle, selflessness, and determination in its greatest sense. The geographical setting is in the south near the town of Natchez around the 1930s, that is evident through the slang and actions of the characters. The point of the story is to present symbolism of the legend of the Phoenix and numerous other things, show similes, irony, and metaphors while holding the reader's interest.

She sees a child that is not there, as well as a ghost that is, in reality, a simple scarecrow. As she falls in the ditch her mind’s activity is quoted as follows: “Down there, her senses drifted away. A dream visited her, and she reached her hand up, but nothing reached down and gave her a pull. This is an indication of her eyes and her aging mind playing tricks on her.
When Phoenix finally makes it to town, as ironic as it sounds she has forgotten her purpose for the trip. She sits frozen in silence when she arrives in the clinic. The nurse speaks up “is he dead?” Referring to her sick grandson, Phoenix’s face lights up like a flame and a change comes over her. She remembers her purpose for the voyage and she is born again. She is here to help her grandchild.
Phoenix’s life is representative of the life of the mythical Phoenix. It is evident from her appearance, behaviors and her actions. Although she appears old and frail it becomes clear that looks can be deceiving. She is kind, strong, selfless and caring. Her love for her grandchild knows no bounds and she will do whatever it takes to help him much like the Phoenix would. Whether it be traversing dangerous paths or facing ghosts, dogs and racist hunters she will always persevere. She is a protector and she is born
