Analyzing Benton's Painting 'Persephone'

228 Words1 Page

In contrast to the modern topic presented in “Hollywood”, the visual literacy in “Persephone” depicts the ancient myth of an innocent woman, Zeus’ daughter, kidnapped by a lecherous man, the god Hades. It is about a past story within a modern setting ̶ the ideal prototype of the countryside. Unlike the sophisticated women that appear in the first painting, “Persephone” is portrayed as a relaxed farmer careless of her nakedness, while her kidnapper reveals the voyeurism that exists in the society. What is more, in the previous painting the actresses are completely conscious that someone is watching them; instead, Persephone is shown as an innocent girl unaware of the lascivious looking man hidden behind the tree. Furthermore, in this artwork, not only the warm colors but also the space is highly different from “Hollywood”. Benton’s “Persephone” shows a color range that reminds the sunset on a hot summer day leaving aside the chaos represented in the other. Therefore, the use of the space and the perspective are harmonized with the female figure which makes the viewer more focused on its protagonist than on the background.
