In Tim O’Brien’s story, The Things They Carried, he walks the reader through the lives of a group of young soldiers in the Vietnam War. He tries to put the reader in the shoes of these soldiers by explaining everything they had to carry during the war, but when reading further into this story he starts showing things the soldiers were carrying that were not physical things; and these things tended to be the heaviest on them. O’Brien dramatizes his opposition to the war without directly stating it by listing and explaining all the things these men had to carry around with them. All the struggle, hardship, and dedication it took to be a soldier, and the true selves of these soldiers are revealed throughout the story and throughout the war. A war can bring out many characteristics in a person you never knew were there, that’s what this story does, it shows you people for who they really are when in tough, deadly situations and the tolls it takes on the individuals.
