1. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AND INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM

DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (DBMS) INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM (IRS)
DBMS offer advance Data Modelling Facility (DMF) including Data Definition Language and Data Manipulation Language for modelling and manipulating data. IRS do not offer an advance DMF. Usually data modelling in IRS is restricted to classification of objects.
Data Definition Language of DBMS is the capability to define the data integrity constraints. In IRS such validation mechanisms are less developed.
DBMS provides precise semantics. IRS most of the time provides imprecise semantics.
DBMS has structured data format. IRS is characterised by unstructured data format.
Query specification is complete in DBMS IRS query specification is incomplete
Query language is artificial in DBMS. IRS query language is near to natural language.

2. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DATA AND INFORMATION

2.1 DATA

Data usually refers to raw data or unprocessed data. Data can be specified as a representation of facts, concepts or instructions in a formalised manner, which should be suitable for communication, processing or explanation by human or electronic machine. Data is described with the help of characters like alphabets, digits or special characters.
Data types consists of images which is data in the form of pictures such as drawings, painting or photographs. Or can be a static or animated graphic used for illustration or as a substitute for text. Data also can be in form of audio where data in the form of sound likes noise, voice recognition and music.
