Love cannot be defined in one sentence or even a paragraph. Every human has his or her own definition of love because people usually define love based on their cultures, backgrounds, social classes, educations, and their societies. In this essay, the main point will be the different kinds of love that Carver illustrates in his story “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love.” In Carver’s story, there are some points that I can relate to my personal experience. There are a few characteristics and symbols in the story that are really important to understand in order to define what a real love is and find the intention thrown out the story. These characteristics includes, Mel, Terri and Ed and Terri’s relationship. Furthermore, symbols such as ”sunlight” and “dark room”,” cardiologist” and “silence” at the end of the story can have a specific intention thrown out of the story.
From his career as a cardiologist and his definition of love in the beginning of the story, Mel seems to be a very intelligent and educated person. However, as the story progresses, Mel, Terri, Nick and Laura got more and more drunk. The drunk they got, the more they seemed confused about what true love is. When Mel and his friend were drunk, Mel started to give examples of an old couple to support his definition of love, but at the end, he seemed confused, and he couldn’t clearly define what love is because he was drunk. Furthermore, Mel was talking about the old couple and how they were nearly close to death in car accident, and then he ended up depression. Mel talked about his first wife, and he mentioned “If I am not praying she’ll get married again I am praying she’ll get herself stung to death by swarm of fucking bees” (Carver 683). Also Raymond Carver wants to tell his readers that love can have different meanings from different people, and that love is based on their experience about love and how love treats them as a person. Carver also intended to show how alcohol played an important role in defining what love is and how someone can forget about his or her love when that person is drunk. Carver intended to show his reader how silences he, and his friend got when the alcohol or gin was finished. Some people fall in love with alcohol and they choose to have alcohol rather than the people they love. Love can be good and lead to success, but it can also be dangerous and end with suicide.
The short story is about two couples drinking and arguing about what love truly is. One of the couples, Terri and Mel, argue about Terri’s ex, Ed. Mel does not think that Terri’s ex truly loved her, but she does. For example, Mel said, “My God, don’t be silly. That’s not love, and you know it,” (412) in response to Terri saying that Ed loved her very much. Many hearts are drawn to history's greatest love stories, such as Romeo and Juliet, Bonnie and Clyde, and Helen and Paris to name a few. One could argue that humanity’s way of finding happiness is to seek love. Pure, unadulterated love is one of the hardest feelings to acquire, but when one does, they’d do anything to keep it. Through Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and his characters, Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale, readers discover that this innate desire to be accepted and loved is both our most fatal flaw and our greatest virtue.
His feelings of animosity and venomous hatred for his ex-wife are in direct conflict with his original self- evaluation of both being capable of understanding, and engaging in that enigma known as true love. Whereas Ed engaged in the violent act of dragging Terri throughout the apartment by her ankles, Mel describes, with almost childlike delight, how he has fantasized about playing the starring role in her murder. Mel does not seem like the type of man who would commit such a deed. He does, however, consider how good it would feel to seek revenge against Marjorie in retaliation for her “crimes” against his heart. The title of the poem “Love is Not All” asserts the impression that suggests the unimportant of love to its reader at first. However, the ending of the poem reveals the ironic truth that love is worthwhile. Millay’s intention is not to confuse readers by using a title that forcefully disrespects love. However, she projects the title of the poem to ascertain the grounds for her argument that love is important. The first six lines of the poem highlight the incompetence of love when compares with the basic supplies for life.
The stunted growth and lack of maturity demonstrated by Charlie’s character is also evidenced in the way that he loves. Charlie has difficulty achieving true intimacy with his wife, leading one to wonder if he ever truly loved Linda.
Alcoholism is often measured in stages. The alcoholic will start with a lighter drink and then slowly spiral into a series of violence and lies. Carver uses the symbols of deceit and violence to show the character’s decent into alcoholism.

This causes her to feel betrayed, but also as if she isn't the naive little girl she once was. By observing this change, you can conclude that the theme she is trying to convey is that as you get older, you also get wiser.
When young and experimental, everyone remembers their first love and what it meant to them and how it shaped them. They are often fond memories of purity or naivety, however, sometimes, those experiences are haunting and leave permanent scars in people's hearts. “Coleman (1993)” tells the tragic love story of a female speaker and her lover. ...the story. It gives us no insight on why the characters were put in this position and why they would even end up being together if they know there will be no happy end. I don’t think it is a movie about love, just a slice of the lives of the two as it happens during that period. Ben is an alcoholic and because of the amount he is drinking, he can not be fully aware of his actions and decisions about what is going on around him. Sera is just a prostitute that loves having control over her clients and has gone through a lot of abuse and out of desperation takes in any guy that treats her humanely. In return for Ben’s loving, Sera slips in the role of the prostitute at the end when she pours liquor over her breasts and lets Ben lick it off fulfilling his greatest fantasy. The story is very slow at times and is not suitable for every audience. For some, it may be too vulgar, for others just too boring, but I believe Figgis and both actors did remarkable jobs. The story is obviously not meant to entertain or to be the typical Hollywood romance drama, but to show Sera and Ben’s relationship leading to isolation, anxiety and self-destruction because life does not always have a happy end.
The characters in this novel are impacted by the conditions of the Chippewa Reservation in North Dakota on which they live. The issues of domestic violence and poverty continually plague the characters in this novel, as they do in real life. Along with conflict, traditional customs and beliefs unite the characters in the novel Love Medicine. For example, the death of June Morrissey, Albertine’s aunt, brings the Kashpaw and Lamartine families together, all back onto the Reservation. On the night of this gathering, King attempts to drown his wife Lynette, who’s white, in the kitchen sink (Erdrich 41). Albertine hurries form where she is outside to see what’s going on and she tries to pull King off of Lynette but isn’t strong enough ( 41). She eventually bites King’s ear and he releases his grip on Lynette (41). The fact that King was horribly drunk caused this incident, he’s usually quite drunk. As a result of this chaos, the pies that had been made for the next day had been destroyed and Albertine describes her attempt to put them back together, “I worked carefully for over an hour. But once they smash there is no way to put them right.” (Erdrich 42). This symbolism represents the hopelessness that many people feel when destruction occurs. They don’t feel that
