Analysis of 7 O'Clock News/Silent Night by Simon and Garfunkel

In expressive arts we are studing the topics the 60’s. We listened to

the song “7 O'clock News/Silent Night” Simon and Garfunkel.

In 1956, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were juniors at Forest Hills

High School in New York City. They began playing together as a group

called Tom and Jerry, with Simon as Jerry Landis and Garfunkel as Tom

Graph, so called because he always liked to track hits on the pop

charts. As seniors in 1957, they then started writing their own songs

in the Everly Brothers' rock and roll style. The famous duo wrote and

composed many number 1’s and were one of the most popular groups on

the 1960’s. They worked together until the 1970’s when Paul Simon’s

began his own solo career. The song “7 O'clock News/Silent Night”, was

a great success, and made a statement about the 60’s.

The song begins with the group singing the Christmas carol silent

night accompanied by a simple piano melody.

They sound soft and gentle as they are singing in a major key and

harmony with each other. This creates a positive, calm and peaceful

atmosphere for the audience.

Gradually a sound appears in the background of the song. It is a man

reading the news but it’s very quiet and drowned out by the silent

night melody. His voice is in monotone and has no emotion in it. This

shows the audience that what he is trying to communicate, that it is

not a positive and happy subject but a serious and cold one. As it

gets louder you can even pick up words and phrases that he is using.

The news reader is telling the audience about the tragic things that

are happening in the 60’s wit...

... middle of paper ...

...o help each other,

and the leave in peace and harmony to make the world a better place,

and to help others with problems and not overlook them and blank them

out because one day you may need help.

Throughout the song and the news go on you get cold and negative

images of the events from around the world, he does not go into detail

about each subject but by using negative language can out his point

across through the language and tone.

You could create a drama piece around the subjects brought up in the

news, or to completely contrast the happy and peaceful things that

happened in the 60’s. I have seen how to use 2 different songs

together to represent different meanings and to show the battle

between peace and war in the 60’s. I could use any topics talked about

in the news, as they are all liked to the 1060’s.
