Whether or not college athletes should be paid has been a major argument for a long time. My opinion on this particular subject is that, I believe college athletes should get paid while they are in school. One reason I believe this is, because college athletes bring in a lot of money for businesses like NCAA and CBS/Turner Sports for March Madness, but receive none of the profit. This money is not even, at least, distributed back into their education. These companies are making income off things such as their names and merchandise like jerseys with the player’s names and sometimes even video games(SmartAsset, 2017). They spend all their hours juggling school work, practice, and trying to fit in a few hours of sleep in between all of their responsibilities. Most of these athletes do not even have money for food, new clothes, or other necessities. These athletes are living in poverty, just to play the sport they love. The least these businesses could do, is give them a little income for all their hard work and dedication to the program. One of the most talented basketball players from the University of Connecticut's, Shabazz Napier, told reporters he goes to bed “starving” often. I believe that if college athletes such as, Shabazz Napier, that are making businesses thousands of dollars each month, should be able to afford at least three meals a day. Not only are these athletes making profit for these businesses, but also for their schools. Some feel that by not paying college athletes that college institutions are thereby exploiting their athletes free of charge, which is unfair. However, this article feels that college athletes are paid very favorably by the large amount of money they receive for schooling through scholarships. Also, since college athletes don’t pay to play or go to school they are receiving a free college degree whether or not they decide to stay in school for four years or not. With the training that they receive from professional trainers and nutritionists for a professional controlled diet they save possibly thousands within the 4 years they attend school and perform in collegiate athletics.
Tyson Hartnett of The Huffington Post once said “Even with any type of scholarship, college athletes are typically dead broke.” This quote regards a tremendous controversy that has been talked about for the past few years. He talks about whether or not college athletes should be paid for their duties. Despite the fact college athletes are not professionals, they should most certainly be paid for playing for their respective schools due to many factors. These factors include health risks and the income bring in for their colleges as well as to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Should college athletes receive pay for what they do? You’ve probably seen this pop-up a million times, and thought about it. You’ve probably figured why should they? Aren’t they already receiving benefits from a full-ride scholarship? But then an athlete will get caught up in a scandal like Johnny Manziel, where he signed footballs for money.. then you think well why shouldn’t he receive that money? And you then contradict yourself. But shouldn’t they receive money from outside sources, and then the benefits from the school. Not get a salary from the school just the benefits they’re already receiving, and money from sponsors. Wouldn’t that make sense considering the money they’re making the school? According to an ESPN report Alabama University makes $123,769,841 in total revenue from sports. (College Athletics Revenue) Yes ONE HUNDRED & TWENTY THREE MILLION. Yet an athlete from Alabama can only receive benefits from a scholarship.. That doesn’t seem right. You would want to be payed when the opportunity arises. It should only be fair these players get a piece of the revenue pie, after all they are the ones creating the revenue. The players should be getting benefits to allow them to pay for basic college needs, grow up to be responsible adults, and allow the NCAA to thrive. This would allow for the NCAA to truly thrive as a sporting association.
College athletes should be paid because of the huge amount of money being made off of the use of their athletic ability. The college basketball and football games that everyone watches on TV is no longer just a game, it is a business. The colleges and arenas hosting such events are not doing it solely for the love of sport, they are doing it for the money that will flow generously into their banking accounts. The coaches also, they are not volunteers, they are not there just for their love of the game, coaching is their job. The athletic directors, coaching staff, and event staff are all doing their job to put food on the table. The fans are watching the game, the players, the ones who are making huge sacrifices to be on the court. The athletes are the only ones in this circle of business who are putting in the hours, maybe even the most hours, and not getting a paycheck. It is time for a change, the fans, the players, and the NCAA is ready for it, it just has to be done. However, there are those out there fighting the other side of this battle, saying there is no need for these student athletes to be paid. Both sides have good points but one of them has great points.

They also get to be coached by top coaches, train in the best training facilities, travel around the country for free, be treated by the best doctors and medicine, and have their chance in the spotlight (Posnanski). With universities constantly raising tuition prices, having free tuition is a big thing, but most, if not all, athletes waste that by focusing just on their sport. While athletes are practicing, others are working to pay off tuition fees, which the athletes get free. In today’s society, one of the big controversies with sports is, should student athletes be be paid a salary? Some people believe that they should be paid and others would completely disagree. Even though they technically are being paid, they really are not. The only type of way the athletes would be paid is through financial aid or if they have a job. Only their education is being paid by the school. Although some people believe that they should be paid, it would not be a good idea at all. So college athletes should not be paid at all because they are basically being paid to study and play a sport.
I think that college football players should get paid, but not a lot. The college football organization brings in a lot of money every year for the schools and I think they should thank the athletes by paying them a little bit of money now and then. College athletes should be paid because they are basically working for the school. When a student gets a scholarship to a college for a sport they are expected to practice with the team and without the team, so on their free time. College athletes go way over the maximum amount of hours they are allowed to practice with the team. These athletes not only play a sport, but are also part of the school’s advertising team and they also bring in a ton of revenue for the team and college. The coaches of these athletes work hard no doubt. But it’s the players who do the real work and get on the field to play. College athletes juggle busy academic and practice schedules all throughout their stressful weeks, so why shouldn't they be compensated for their time dedicated to sports? NCAA rules strictly prohibits players from being paid for all the hard work they do to protect “amateurism”, but are you really an amateur putting in over 40 hours a week between practice and other activities? Although students earn a college scholarship, that doesn’t cover living expenses, and access to a degree at the end of their career, players should be paid because schools, coaching staffs and major corporations are profiting off their free labor.
On the issue of college athletes getting paid, I believe they should. When I mean getting paid I only mean a stipend or weekly check, not thousands or millions. All the hard work and dedication they put into their sport and academics are worthy enough. I have had a chance to play collegiate sports and it takes a lot out of you mentally and physically. The student athletes deserve at least enough money to have a normal student life. $300-$400 a month should give athletes enough money to get the required necessities. All this does is replace the notion of the athlete getting a job for a source of income. This will also help reduce the rate at which athletes accept money, cars, and gifts from boosters. When athletes get caught accepting something from a booster it looks bad on the athlete and the college. So, in my opinion yes college athletes should get paid, there is too much money that the universities have earned floating around going unanswered for the athletes not to get their cut.

(Thelin) Tyler Harnett, a writer at the Huffington Post, took his standpoint on the topic in the article "Why College Athletes Should be Paid," which clearly states his claim, college athletes should receive pay. I disagree with Harnett's viewpoint and I don't believe college athletes should be paid because they are already receiving a scholarship, plus some schools lack the amount of funding, and overall unfairness between students and other colleges.
