The documentary What Poor Child Is This? Poverty and America’s Children (2011) is a film that investigates the plight of the impoverished and educates viewers on how daily life looks, as well as how harmful poverty is to America’s developing children. This My goals are to clarify the root causes and influences of poverty as mentioned in the documentary, as well as describe my opinions on poverty and state what I have learned from the film.
Causes and Signs of Poverty In America it is often believed that a family is impoverished due to the heads of the family, at some point, making a decision that has led them to their current financial state. This film clearly states this widely held view to be false, and there are several circumstances which cause a family and it’s children to be impoverished, but they all boil down into two broad topics. The first is income flow, or the amount of income being earned by a family, and the second is a families stock of wealth or savings and valuables. In fact, it is also vital to know if the family’s financial status is transient or permanent, as well as the duration or the length of time a child is in poverty, the intensity, or how far below the poverty line a child is, and the timing of when in a child’s life he or she experiences poverty. A child raised in a family that is dealing with transient poverty will be less affected by a lack of monetary support than a child raised in a permanent state of poverty if the duration, intensity, and timing are all the same.
