The novel In Cold Blood written by Truman Capote about two convoluted criminals and their lives together before and after they kill a family. The story also gives the reader insight to the innocent family of four that was brutally slaughtered by the two men who did it without blinking twice. Capote mainly purses Perry and Dick and shows both of their points of view. In the passage being analysed, the reader examines the view of both the criminals in the same conversation that is happening. In several of the chapters, author Truman Capote displays both Perry’s and Dick 's aspects on similar events, conversations, and even their interrogations, and confessions during the book. The juxtaposition of the two characters point of view impacts the overall story in effectively and convincing way.
In this passage, Dick and Perry are driving in their car driving to Mexico City to escape the murder they recently committed. The passage begins with Dicks point of view. Capote presents Dick as a void character. Even though he was raised in normal family with both parents, his dad was a father, he lived a somewhat detrimental life. At a young age Dick was married, divorced and then married again. He lived the life of a loner, moving around trying to avoid police from petty crimes he committed. Capote explains his backstory in short segments. Capote is able to give Dick very very little sympathy when using this writing style. When they talk about similar conversations the juxtaposition is able to give the reader more information about the criminal 's character and their inside thoughts. Dicks inner thoughts reveal that he is uneasy about Perry. He says he is doesn’t like when Perry wears sunglasses because; “It was unpleasant having Perry’s eyes hidden behind the privacy of those tinte, reflecting surfaces (Page 108).” He also explains that Perry has a very uneasy temper and could just blow up in a minute, but he could have a cool calm look on his face. Perry also has hidden things revealed about himself. Capote examines his background and explained it must 've led him live the life he is living. It is also revealed that he lied to act masculine in front of Dick and to gain his trust. The juxtaposition was able to help the reader fully understand both the characters deeper than most novels.
