With nuclear war destroying the Northern Hemisphere, radioactive fallout is threating to destroy the rest of the world. Scientist believe that within the next year, the radioactive dust will reach those living in southern Australia. Melbourne now the largest city in the world, is home to a Lieutenant Commander by the name of Peter Holmes. Peter, a commander in the Australian navy, is appointed as an officer onboard the U.S.S.Scorpion. The Scorpion is one of the last American nuclear submarines left in the world and is captained by Commander Dwight Towers. Although he knows he will be leaving his family behind with radiation dust quickly barreling down on Australia, Peter decides to accept the position as an officer onboard. Before they depart on the trip Peter invites Dwight to spend the weekend at his home in Falmout. While visiting with Peter, Dwight meets Moira Davidson, a young women who drinks constantly to cover up her fear of dying and the fact that she will never be able to fulfill her dreams as a little kid. That Sunday, Dwight visits the local church alone and begins to think about his family in America. Although he knows everyone has died, he still thinks of them deeply and tries to believe that they are still alive and are waiting for him to return to his home town in Connecticut. The following day, John Osborne, a civilian research scientist, joins the crew, and gets accompanied to the submarine and its tight leaving quarters. Dwight invites Moira, the young town’s lady, to tour the submarine and then go dancing at the towns bar. As the night ends and the sunrises the next day, the submarine sets out for an eleven day cruise up the coast of Australia, hoping to find signs of life. By the end of August, radiation has reached the town and everyone begins to get sick. While sitting his is Grand Prix winning Ferrari, he takes a cyanide pill and ends his life. Peter takes on the hard task of euthanizes his baby girl, Jennifer. Soon after he and Mary take pills together in bed so that they can die in peace why holding each other in their arms. Dwight decides to kill himself with the ship, like every captain wishes. As a final duty to the navy, Dwight sinks the Scorpion in international waters and goes down with the submarine. Moira hoping to go down with the submarine also, was told she was not allowed to by Dwight. Moira decides to drive her car to a cliff overlooking the sinking submarine. While watching the sunset and ship, she takes her final pill along with one last drink.
