PLOT SYNOPOSIS: The Notebook is a modern day love story that was written by Nicholas Sparks. The story begins with you thinking it is going to be about a man living in a nursing home that reads to other patients. The man’s journal readings flashback to the 1930’s and 1940’s. I felt the storyline was the typical rich girl’s parents do not approve of her dating a boy from lower class in the Pre-World War II era. The story flashes back to a couples younger years and moves forward to the nursing home in 1995.
The book is set mainly in New Bern, North Carolina. The 15 year old rich girl character is Allison Nelson. Her friends, Fin and Sarah, introduce her to 17 year old Noah Calhoun. Anne Nelson is Allison’s mother. She keeps Noah’s letters that come in the mail each month secret from Allison. Fourteen years later, Allison sees an article in the newspaper about Noah restoring an old plantation house. Allison goes back to see Noah, but she is engaged to Lon Hammond, Jr, a lawyer from a good family. Allison spends a few days with Noah and realizes she still loves him. Anne gives Allison all the unopened letters that had arrived from

First point is after meeting, they had to make it through her parents’ disapproval, their different backgrounds and different economic statuses. Second point is they are separated for many years. Her mom wants her to change, Noah works and goes to war, and tries to get over his love for Allison. When she returns she is engaged to another man, but their love was stronger. Third point is that their lives together still included hard times. Their son died, they became elderly, but lived in the same nursing home where Allison suffers from Alzheimer’s. She is still able to occasionally remember Noah and the doctors do not know how in her late stages of the disease. Their love remained strong through every difficult stage all the way to their
The story takes place in Annadel, a rural town seated in Justice County of southwestern West Virginia, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author does a fantastic job bringing the reader to the setting through the story being depicted by four different characters’ self narrated stories, which effectively puts the reader in the character’s shoes. In addition, a unique trait is added, with the dialogue being written in a presumably region and period specific style southern dialect. This feature not only makes the reader feel as though they are there at that time and place, but also provides for a more interesting read. While the unique style added to the dia...

When Ellen tried to go look for help for her mother her father stopped her. He told them that if she looked for helped he would kill them both. After her mother died she was left under her fathers custody. Her father was a drunk. He would physically and mentally abuse her. Ellen was forced to pay bills, go grocery shopping, cook for herself, and do everything else for herself. Ellen couldn't take it any more so she ran away her friends house. Julia had a husband named Roy. They were both hippies. Julia and Roy cared a lot about Ellen. After Ellen turned 11 years old she was forced to go live with her grandmother. Ellen didn't want to leave Julia and Roy but her grandmother had won custody. Her grandmother was a cruel old lady. Ellen spends the summer with her grandmother. Mavis and her become good friends. Mavis would talk about how she knew Ellen's mother and how much Ellen resembled her mother. Her grandmother didn't think the same. She thought that Ellen resembled her father. She also hated that man. Her grandmother would often compare her with her father. The setting of the book takes place in Gloucester, Massachusetts. And in the grand banks of the atlantic ocean and on the boat of the Andrea Gail. I put a picture of the town of Gloucester and their harbor which represents their home and their last time on land before the crew died. The Andrea Gail was the only boat that got caught in one of the roughest storms in history and was not found until years later. The map of the three grand banks shows the spots where the Sword fishermen would go to catch fish and spend their time out at sea.The Crow’s Nest bar is the second home of the crew and would be forever empty without the presence of the crew on the Andrea Gail even when the bar is full it’s still empty.
Thirdly, the setting of the story is set in Salinas, California. Ironically, the author was born in Salinas. It is the time of the Great Depression and middle-class has been hit hard. The story begins in Weed, a California mining town.
The characters are impacted by the setting sharply because it both closes and opens possibilities as the story moves forward. At first, the setting is in Sylvan, South Carolina. The author describes Sylvan simply by stating, “…population 3,100. Peach stands and Baptist churches, that sums it up.” Clearly the setting here is not exactly note-worthy; however, quite a few events happen. Lily, the main character, lives with her father T-Ray and her opportunities are
Why are the prices so high? Some critics of the drug companies argue that the larger firms are ripping off the American public, are dishonest and, in some cases, unsafe. On the other hand, there are health care workers such as doctors and their supporters who claim that research and testing for drugs costs money. This supposedly justifies their prices for their products. Also, as an argument to their side, they say that their practice is a benefit to the improvement to mankind. It is a life saving business, but are these prices justified? As one can see, this is a very important issue in medicine today. It affects everyone involved with medicine, which is much of the American public. It also affects the physicians and drug makers.
This book is set in Forks, Washington, a small, rainy town. Bella, the protagonist of the story, is a quiet, shy, introverted teen. She has just moved in with her father, Charlie, so that her flighty mother can follow her baseball-player husband around. Charlie is an earnest, local sheriff who just wants to spend some time with his daughter for a change. Jessica is her best friend and the most popular girl in school. Edward is her moody, 100 year old vampire boyfriend with a quirky family to match. James is the main antagonist of the story and also a vampire bent on killing Bella.
Rising prescription drug prices are driving nearly two million Americans to cross international borders to seek necessary medications. Some are physically venturing into Canada and Mexico for the pharmaceuticals, while others are turning to mail-order pharmacies via the Internet. Purchasing prescriptions from Canada and Mexico is markedly less expensive than buying them at your local pharmacy or from a U.S. online pharmacy; however, the question is why? The why is what economists call price discrimination. It means charging different prices to different buyers of the same product. Price discrimination works in the drug industry because drugs are very expensive to develop, but inexpensive to manufacture. American consumers are exhauste...
After Allies father catches her and Noah making out in the truck, he tells Allie that he wants to have the chance to meet her friend, so he politely asked Allie to invite Noah over Sunday for dinner. While seating at the dinner table, Noah was asked what job he does for a living. After Noah stated that he was a laborer it was pretty clear by their facial expressions (especially her mother’s) that they did not approve of their relationship. Later, Anne makes the statement that “summers almost over” giving her daughter the idea that her and Noah probably will not be seeing each other anymore. Moreover, Anne decided to tell Noah about Allie’s school plans, and how he was not in the plan. Anne believes that their relationship is just a summer fling, or a short-term initial attraction. This scene most certainly relates to chapter nine. Allie was unable to develop her Relationship of Choice simply because they did not find Noah suitable for her, mainly because he was not wealthy. Al...
The man, Noah, is a poet in Allie's eyes and he expresses love as, "Our souls were one, if you must know and never shall they be apart; With splendid dawn, your face aglow I reach for you and find my heart" (183). As teenagers, the two of these "love birds" had one summer of intense passion that was ended abruptly by Allie's parents disapproval. When Allie left New Bern the couple planned to keep in touch by writing letters, but because Allie's moms did not approve of Noah, she hid all his letters from her without Allie knowing. Noah continued to write but without a reply, his hopes dissolved. While Noah sat on his porch playing his guitar with his three-legged dog Clem, he reminisced about the adventures they had, foreshadowing the events that followed. "And if, in some distant place in the future, we see each other in our new lives, I will smile at you with joy, and remember how we spent a summer beneath the trees, learning from each other and growing in love. And maybe, for a brief moment, you'll feel it too, and you'll smile back, and savor the memories we will always share together" (151). There are surprises one would never expect and descriptions that one can't even imagine; they pull the reader in and paint a picture in the mind. This novel will make the reader cry, gasp, sigh, and cry once more.
This theme is a big lesson learned throughout the whole story of Allie and Noah. She loves Noah with all of her heart when she is a young woman, and yet when they were separated for a period of time she finds her way back to him. When Allie sees Noah again for the first time in years, she realizes she never stopped loving him and her heart belongs to him. When she has to choose between Noah and Lon, she follows her heart and chooses the man to whom she loves most.
The couple spent the summer together and developed the meaning of true love. One evening, Noah takes Allie, to an old farmhouse, tells her his dream of buying and restoring it one day, she tells him she wants to be a part of that dream, she wants the house white, have blue shutters, a wrap-around porch, and wants a room that overlooks the creek so she can paint. With all the excitement the two lost track of time and when she returned home she found out her parents called the police; her parents forbid her to ever see Noah again. Allies parents did not approve of the social differences in the teens upbringing. Allie’s mother moved her away to New York, for her to forget Noah, and interact with people of her social lifestyle at college.
The story takes place in the outskirts of London. Almost the entire story takes place in the family’s luxurious five-floor house, although it starts out with the main character
Sparks was inspired by his wife’s grandparents, who spent sixty years together, and had a beautiful, yet rare, relationship that withstood the test of time and circumstances. Sparks believes that “true love exists and that there’s evidence of it every day.” (Sparks). The Notebook is a tender story about the everlasting and enduring power of true love between teenagers Noah and Allie, who forge an intense summer romance, and after years of separation caused by class differences find themselves reunited. After a fourteen year separation, Allie returns to visit Noah to determine what it was they shared and why it had such a lasting impact. Allie must make a decision between Lon, the man she promised to marry, and Noah the man she has always loved. As she decides, she thinks to herself, “She wanted something else, something different, something more. Passion and romance, perhaps, or maybe a quiet conversation in candlelit rooms, or perhaps something as simple as not being second.” The theme of love conquers all is the focus as Noah tries to regain Allie’s love and Allie struggles with telling Noah that she’s engaged to another man, yet still is in love with him. The story is told from two different points of view. The first is told in first person as Noah tells of his present life with Allie at Creekside Extended Care Home. The second is told in third person as Noah reads a story from a notebook
