The movie Unbroken is based on a true story. The main character Louis Zamperini defied expectations by surviving many excruciating circumstances during World War II. The message of the film is that the ability to persevere and forgive in life are very important qualities to have in life. Zamperini withstood forty-seven days stranded at see as well as a Japanese prisoner of war camp during his time at war. He ability to preserve and survive the hardships he went through and forgive those who hurt him allowed him to be a peace later in his life. I believe his grit and determination to survive partially came from his childhood. The Zamperini family grew up in poverty in California. He had to fight for everything he received growing up. A major symbol are the sharks that encircle Louis and his fellow crew mates while they were stuck on a raft at sea. The sharks symbolize the many dangers that surround Louis and his crew mates during the war. They also appear to be the cruel monsters that Louis encounters during the movie. Little did he know that at the Japanese Prisoner of War camp he would face a much bigger monster. Mutsuhiro “The Bird” Watanabe was a Japanese POW commander that singled Zamperini out from all the other war prisoners. He would torture and abuse Zamperini every day. Watanabe made Zamperini clean out a pig sty with his bare hands. He also forced Louis to hold a heavy beam over his head for forty-five minutes. If Louis failed Watanabe said that he would kill him. Watanabe punched Louis in the face constantly while he held the beam. However, because Louis was in excellent shape from his track career he miraculously was able to hold on and survive. This also impressive because Louis lost tons of weight because of the conditions and the limited food he was given. Wantanabe symbolized evil and cruelty. He represents a human’s top capacity of maliciousness. The prisoners nicknamed Watanabe “The Bird”. This name resembled the freedom and rights he had that were taken from his prisoners. It also symbolizes the freedom he had to torture and do whatever he wanted to his …show more content…

The producer really put an emphasis on the use of color to tell Zamperini’s story. The color pink was only used when Louis was around his mother. Pink symbolizes warm, loving, and caring. This means that even though Louis always got in trouble when he was younger his mother still loved him. She would love him no matter what he did and would always be there for him. Also, another color the producer used strategically in the film was red. Red was used very sparingly throughout the film. It was only used for the Nazi symbols when Louis was at the Olympics and the Japanese in air battles. The reason for this is red normally is a color that represents danger. The Nazis and Japanese were Americas opponents during World War II. This means that these were the groups that presented danger towards Louis and his crew mates during the film. Finally, when Louis was stuck at sea with his crewmates the color blue controls the screen. When Louis made it to Japan and the jungle the color green took over the screen. This was a very effective strategy the producer executed. By the time Louis got stuck in the Prisoner of War camp with the bird all the color in the film was drained. This emphasizes how atrocious the Bird was to Louis. He completely dehumanized Louis. The bird “drained” Louis confidence and his ability to function properly. It took Louis many years to recover from the Bird’s harsh
