¹I believe Kevin’s development from infancy to adolescence has reflected the characteristic of stability. From the moment Kevin was born, he has displayed the consistency of a temperament of a difficult child. Furthermore, he has a strong tendency of showing aggression when things did not go his way. Kevin did not show interest in anything particularly, with the exception of archery, which seem to be one of the few that held his interest, which may seem to supports his violent behaviors. In generally Kevin had exhibited disengagement with his family, he had a complex relationship with his mother, as an infant, Eva and Kevin failed to establish a positive attachment.. Although I felt Nurture may have played a role in shaping Kevin’s development, from the inconsistency of parenting style, and the negative psychological experiences he has received from Eva’s resentment of having a child. It would seem to me that the experiences Kevin had endured in life did not improved Kevin’s natural tendency. While it is possible to establish a secure attachment as long as the caregivers sensitively adjust their behavior to fit the baby’s needs. However, I did not see any improvements in Kevin and Eva’s relationship, rather, they often clashed with each other. Eva’s capacity to care for a difficult-to-care infant was greatly strained, early on, she seem to concede in managing Kevin’s temperament.. The clip ‘Trouble with Evan’ narrates the struggle of a boy named Evan that puts his stepdad Mike and his mother Karen through stress because of his ill manners. Despite him being at a tender age of 11 years and in 6th grade, his mannerism is worrying because he is already engaging in morally unacceptable activities such as shoplifting, smoking, and gross disobedience, bullying other children and even stealing from his parents. Therefore, this puts his parents under severe psychological stress as they try to figure where their parenting is going wrong in a bid together to make him grow morally upright (Henning, 2016). Evan’s behavior was also straining his relationship with his parents and this stressed the parents as they tried to figure out different ways in which they could once again improve their relationship with their son. In addition, the clip revolves around trying to uncover the mystery as to what could be causing Evan’s unacceptable behavior.
The Nurture vs. Nature has been a long standing debate amongst psychologists. This psychological controversy questions whether or not the environment has more or less to do with the outcome of a child’s psychological development than the genetics involved. John Bowlby takes attachment theory in a more biological/ evolutionary perspective, in which he views these formations of bonds as a survival mechanism in which the infant ensures its survival by attaching themselves to an adult (caregiver) who can meet their needs. Attachment theory explains the human’s way of relating to a caregiver and receives an attachment figures relating to the parent, and children. In addition, the concept explains the confidence and ability for a child to free explore their environment with a place to seek support, protection, and comfort in times of distress (Levy, Ellison, Scott, and Bernecker, 2010, p. 193). Within attachment theory explains different types of attachment styles that children experience during early childhood. These attachment styles affect the relationships they continue to build in adulthood. The best attachment style happens when the parent is attuned to the child during his or her early childhood called secure attachment (Reyes, 2010, p. 174). In order for complete secure attachment, the child needs to feel safe, seen, and soothed. Any relationship that deviates from this model represents the anxious or insecure attachment. Especially three of the most common disorders, Clinical Depression, Anxiety Disorder, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. John Bowlby’s attachment theory established that an infant’s earliest relationship with their primary caregiver or mother shaped their later development and characterized their human life, “from the cradle to the grave” (Bowlby, 1979, p. 129). The attachment style that an infant develops with their parent later reflects on their self-esteem, well-being and the romantic relationships that they form. Bowlby’s attachment theory had extensive research done by Mary Ainsworth, who studied the mother-infant interactions specifically regarding the theme of an infant’s exploration of their surrounding and the separation from their mother in an experiment called the strange situation. Ainsworth defined the four attachment styles: secure, insecure/resistant, insecure/avoidant and disorganized/disoriented, later leading to research studies done to observe this behavior and how it affects a child in their adolescence and adulthood.
Let us take a look at the most important factor that determines the health of our adult relationships; that is infant attachment. Enough is a 2002 thriller directed by Michael Apted and written by Nicholas Kazan. This film is very similar to the Stephen King’s 1995 film adaptation of Dolores Claiborne directed by Taylor Hackford. The protagonists in both these films find themselves trapped in abusive relationships and turn to drastic means to protect themselves and their daughters. In the film Enough, Slim runs away with her daughter from her abusive husband to protect her life whereas, Dolores, in Dolores Claiborne is trapped in her little small town with her husband who is abusive to her and is now sexually abusing their daughter. These women find themselves in these abusive relationships and become empowered to take control of their lives. The writers skillfully use literary elements in these films to convey this message.
Attachment theory is the idea that a child needs to form a close relationship with at least one primary caregiver. The theory proved that attachment is necessary to ensure successful social and emotional development in an infant. It is critical for this to occur in the child’s early infant years. However, failed to prove that this nurturing can only be given by a mother (Birns, 1999, p. 13). Many aspects of this theory grew out of psychoanalyst, John Bowlby’s research. There are several other factors that needed to be taken into account before the social worker reached a conclusion; such as issues surrounding poverty, social class and temperament. Before the civil rights movement could begin, a few courageous individuals had to guide the way. Dr. Vernon Johns was one of those individuals. Dr. Vernon Johns was a pastor and civil rights activist in the 1920s. Johns became the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama in the late 1940s. The topic of whether human development is influenced by nature or nurture has been researched for quite a while now. I have always been torn between the two and I’m glad that this class is a part of our program as it clarifies some of the questions I have. The video First Impressions: Exposure to Violence and a Child’s Developing Brain is documentation that greatly illustrates how much an environment can impact a developing child. The video provided several real-life stories where children were exposed to violence in their homes. There were cases that indicated that the children became very aggressive in school, inflict harm on themselves, and grew up to be batterers.
