The artifact I chose for this paper is a movie called Fruitvale Station. This movie is based on a true story and is about an African American male named Oscar Grant who finds himself in trouble with law enforcement. In the movie Oscar is shown as a man that is having problems in many aspects of his life. He has a four year old daughter that he cares deeply for. However, the relationship he has with his daughters mother is difficult. Oscar also lost his job which puts a strain on him paying his bills and caring for his family. Since he is desperate for extra cash he resorts to selling drugs to provide for his family. The movie shows flashbacks of Oscar having a history of being incarcerated. His relationship with his mother becomes challenging

This book The New Jim Crow introduces many stories of fellow African-Americas that also have been discriminated when in fact they are complying with officers. Adolph Lyon was an black man who was stopped on a burned out tail light. The officers drew their weapons and ordered him out of his car. He obeyed officers and did as he was told. Lyon then tried to explain to officers that his keys were hurting his hand but the officers reacted by putting him in a choke hold. The choke hold left Lyon severely injured (Chapter 3). I had no idea that race could be a component in whether to stop a person before this class. After reading about the government allowing this I realized how easy it was for an officer to take advantage of their power. The book states, “The problem is that although race is rarely the sole reason for a stop or search, it is frequently a determinative reason” (Chapter 3).
