The three videos that I observed are Case Social Worker, Addictions Therapists, and Child Find Specialist. The video I observed was the Case Social Worker the interview with Sue Dowling (Dowling, S). The video was about a interview was with Sue Dowling, who currently works with the Social Service Department in the Arlington Massachusetts area, and is an ongoing assessment social worker. Dowling noted in the interview that there are three phases in the Department of Social Services. The first phase is an intake or investigations. The second phase is the assessment. The third phase is the on-going assessment. The intake or investigation is an investigation of the complaint. When a social worker gets a complaint or issues they must conduct a 10 day investigation. During the beginning of the 10 days if the child is in an …show more content…
She said how a case gets started is someone will call and make a complaint about an issue. First the complaint will be investigated. If they think it is a non emergency they will investigate it for 10 days. This is done by visits the child 's school and questions the staff about the child well-being. They also talk with others who may know something about the child, for example, neighbors or family members. Then after this if any maltreatment is suspected they will follow the case more thoroughly. Dowling said that one of her current cases is a mother who is experience domestic violence issues with her husband. The couple has a girl and boy ages 7 and 8 and the couple has been fighting in front of their children. The complaint was reported by the school the children attend. She said they provided help for the mother, though resources for domestic violence. Likewise, she offer help for the father, but he never successfully following though. The father moved from the home, since, then the children are doing much better and they are improving in
The Daniel Pelka serious case review is one of many that are conducted around the United Kingdom every year. A serious case review is a local enquiry into the death or serious injury of a child, where abuse or neglect are known or suspected. These are conducted by the Local Safeguarding Children Boards; with the main focus being on what lessons can be learnt locally to prevent this from happening again (Brandon, Bailey, Belderson, 2010). In this textual analysis we will be looking back at previous case reviews including Jasmine Beckford and Baby P. We will then look at what recommendations have been made and use the Peka case to see weather we have learned from our previous mistakes or are we still in the same position now as we where then.
Child Protective Services systems are often called “broken,” and the case of Logan Marr is a solid example of why. Logan was taken away from her mother, Christy, after an extensive battle that involved accusations, investigations, and mandates. After the struggle, Logan was finally placed into a foster home under the supervision of Sally Schofield, a child caseworker of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. Schofield admits that she soon saw that book-learning and experience were two different things. Her lack of true preparation for the supervision and care of Logan ultimately lead to the death of the child.
Waters explain what she does on a micro level it fits the description of what a unified model of advocacy entails. From when a child is removed from their homes and placed into the care of the state, specific tasks have been allocated to her and her unit. As the social worker or case worker read the reports provided an understanding is developed. And if an understanding isn’t developed through reports, the next step of visiting the child, requesting documents from psychiatrist, medical doctors and/or psychologist allows one to gain further insight. A case plan is then created, which states what services the parents and the children must complete and is presented in court to a judge. The advocating, evaluating and ongoing monitoring as mentioned in hoefer in table 1.1 under advocacy practice (,p. 5) is continuous until the child is either returned home or giving a goal of

For instance, it strengthened the agencies concerned with the wellbeing of the children to investigate, report, and prosecute those found culpable. The changes mandated such organizations to initiate prosecution following reports of child abuse and neglect (Reder & Duncan, 2013). The case led to new transformations that saw the introduction of foster care, particularly to the children that were suspected to be experiencing maltreatment to save them from the unfairness. Many firms became alert and interested in children’s welfare after Brown’s case, a situation that contributed to the effective introduction and implementation of the acts that protect the
Confidentiality and trust between the client and social worker is an important part of the therapeutic process. Confidentiality is discussed frequently with the client, in trainings, and in supervisions. When a client first begins services there are multiple forms to fill out, many of which explain the agency’s confidentiality policies and provide client’s the opportunity to agree to share information with certain parties (i.e. their PCP, psychiatrist, specialty providers) or not share any information at all. Despite this focus on confidentiality there are some areas where “the rights of others take precedence over a client’s right to confidentiality” (Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, & Gottfried, 2017, p. 76). In situations where child abuse or neglect is suspected by the social worker, the social worker will breach confidentiality in order to protect the child. In fact, “all 50 states have statutes making it mandatory for professional to report suspected or known child abuse. Moreover,
The government designates certain professionals within society as mandated reporters. This means that if a person, who holds a position identified by the government, suspects that a child is being abused or neglected, they must go through the process of reporting the abuse/neglect to their local Department of Health and Human services office (“Michigan Child Abuse Laws”, 2017). This policy is relevant not only to those working within the social work field, but also to those who work closely with children, such as teachers and day care workers. Michigan’s Child Protection Law identifies citizens in the following positions as mandated reporters:
...children, young people and their families can be both complex and difficult. Social work practice is one of the most challenging as it involves work with a diverse range of both professionals and service users. However, there is more that one single reason for this. As all professionals, agencies and parents continue to work together in various different cases, a variety of skills are required including: communication, preparation, intervention skills, assessment of significant harm, research of current legislation and decision making skills, all of which contribute to the complexities and difficulties of social work. It could be argued that these difficulties are highlighted most in many public cases of child abuse; moreover these cases can be seen to be changing social work practice, affecting the difficulties and complexities of working within this profession.
Despite the advances that have been made in recent years to promote better interagency working, the child protection system is still under enormous pressure. Since 2008; referrals, assessments, investigations, and the number of children with protection plans have...
It is only human to be biased. However, the problem begins when we allow our bigotry to manifest into an obstacle that hinders us from genuinely getting to know people. Long time diversity advocate, Verna Myers, in her 2014 Ted Talk, “How to overcome our biases? Walk boldly toward them” discusses the implicit biases we may obtain when it comes to race, specifically black men and women. Myers purpose is quite like the cliché phrase “Face your fears.” Her goal is to impress upon us that we all have biases (conscious or unconscious). We just have to be aware of them and face them head on, so that problems such as racism, can be resolved. Throughout the Ted Talk, Verna Myers utilizes an admonishing yet entertaining tone in order to grasp our attention
Because the information these selected professionals provided could be matched against pending cases in the local child protective agency, Westat was able to estimate rates of nonreporting among the surveyed professionals. It could not, of course, estimate the level of unintentional nonreporting, since there is no way to know of the situations in which professionals did not recognize signs of possible mistreatment. There is also no ...
First of all, it is necessary to be familiarized with the code of ethics and values to guide one’s practice and give guidance for decision-making. While the textbook does not mention laws specific to BC, it gives a good overview on the baseline of what social workers follow across the country. From what I have found, the relevant legislation is the Child, Family, and Community Service Act. First of all, the first relevant legislation is the duty to report, which was relevant to Raisa’s childcare worker and the neighbour. After, child protection workers are required to respond to child abuse immediately with a family based investigation to ensure the safety of the child and the parent’s ability to protect the child from harm. Because child protection workers work in the best interest of the chid, the law says that action must be taken to protect them from danger with a standardized risk assessment. In the case of Raisa, her protection must come first, preferably by maintaining the family home by reducing risk by removing Barry from the home or worse, by apprehending Raisa if her safety could not be
In Jane McGonigal’s Ted Talk, “The game that can give you ten extra years of life” explains how she created a game called “Jane the Concussion Slayer” to help her overcome a concussion that didn’t heal properly. McGonigal describes to her audience the different levels and power-ups she created to make herself feel better. In doing so, she believed it helped her tackle challenges with more creativity, determination, and optimism. McGonigal then concludes her speech and challenges her audience to create their own game to add years to their lives. Taking away from this video, I have decided to create my own game so I can have a good and productive fall semester by creating “Power Points” to help me stay an organized and determined college student.
Domestic violence has increased over the years and has become a major issue for the children that live through it. In a study organized by David Wolfe, researchers concluded that from 1990 to 1993, there was an increase of 256,112 child abuse cases (Wolfe11). In a more recent evaluation relating to domestic violence by Louise Gerdes, the U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) made an assessment on Child Protective Services (CPS) and reported that domestic abuse and neglect claimed the lives of 1,760 children in 2007 in comparison to 1,460 in 2005 (Gerdes 129-130). The neglect that these children are put in can only be categorized as child abuse. With all of these abuse cases, one could wonder how this abuse might be carried out against the well-being of the child.
Social Workers are different people who help certain children to find better homes for them. In addition, they help trouble teens with different things but I believe before they get the police involve they check the home surroundings first and talk to the parents? The social worker knows that the best interest is for the child and not the parents. If the child feels threatens with his/her life the social worker needs to look at the living conditions that the child live in ,talk to the parents and if the parents doesn’t solve the problem then the social workers are liable to get the police involved and take the child to Child Protective Services. From then the social worker needs to find good adoptive parents with good a good background, no trouble, and a good living environment for the child.
