Women in America had not been working until the start of World War II. Since then, policies have been established to help to counter the discrimination against women in the workforce. Policies like Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1964 and Equal Pay act of 1963 had been implemented in order for women to be seen as equals in the labor workforce. However, many believe that women are actually paid less compared to men leading to a growing debate on whether a gender wage gap exists or not. This can attribute to a variety of contributors leading to women having lower wages than men. Women are expected to have children and manage the household while marinating a full-time job. Many have claimed it is a myth and is impractical in today 's world, however, reports as recent as April of 2015 still show a gender wage gap. This can be attributed to a verity of things such as stereotypes or choice of education and in some cases discrimination. What was really astonishing was the fact women were paid less in female-dominated jobs.
For this paper, I plan to explore the reasons of why women get paid less. This can relate to policies that have passed in the United States but also expectations of women workers. In the thesis statement by Zsuzsa Daczo, looking at the gender wage gap on both sides but also bringing in the sociological side of this argument. Furthermore, I want to look at the correlation between single mothers and poverty. Women are paid less, are they more prone to be living below the poverty line? I also plan to find more examples on why the gender wage gap exists. Many do claim that these factors play a critical role but what else does. The best example was about society playing a role in the reason why women earn less. While having a child is a choice few look deeper into the stereotypes imposed on the women.
