Every now and then, one needs to escape the cynical world and delve into a bit of celebratory sugary sweetness to make you happier to be alive. Enchanted is the perfect film to lift your mood as you absorb the entertaining fish-out-of-water fairytale about a princess exiled by an evil queen from the storybook land of Andalasia to “a place where there are no happily-ever-afters”, New York. Giselle’s fiancé, Prince Edward, and her chipmunk friend, Pip, follow her to New York to rescue her. Meanwhile, Giselle finds shelter with single father, Robert, a lawyer that does not believe in fairy tales, and his daughter, Morgan, who believes without hesitation. Over the decades, Disney has inspired numerous spoofs and parodies, but the company’s film Enchanted signifies a first for the House that Walt Built, as this Disney film takes satirical aim at itself (Alter, 2007). Director Kevin Lima states that there are thousands of Easter eggs in Enchanted, either paying homage to Disney classics, such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella, or in parody of Disney’s plot staples: poison apples, clock’s striking midnight, and true love’s kiss (Sciretta, 2008). Several actors from past Disney films also make contributions in the film through either on-screen appearances or the voice narration, done by Mary Poppins’ Julie Andrews, which begins, “Once upon a time in the animated magical kingdom of Andalasia” (Chase, Perkash, Swerdlow, & Lima, 2007).
