The Dursleys, a wealthy English family, begin to notice strange appearances around town. That night Dumbledore, a schoolmaster of a wizarding school, and McGonagall, a professor for Dumbledore, are outside the Dursley’s home when Dumbledore tells her that Voldemort has killed the Potters but Harry lived through the event. Hagrid, the groundskeeper for the wizarding school, then arrives holding baby Harry Potter. Dumbledore leaves Harry and an explanatory note on the doorstep of the his relatives, the Dursleys.
Ten years later, the entire Dursley home is under the control of the Dursley boy Dudley, who bullies Harry relentlessly. Dudley is extremely spoiled while Harry is mistreated and lives in a cupboard underneath the stairs. On Dudley’s birthday they go to the zoo, where the Harry talks to a snake and the glass for the exhibit vanishes trapping Dudley on the other side. Harry is then punished for this unexplained event. When they go back home a mysterious letter arrives for Harry from Hogwarts, a wizarding school. Mr.Dursley tries to keep them from Harry, even when these letters fill every crack in the house. The Dursleys and Harry leave to a secluded island in fear of these mysterious letters. Midnight on Harry’s birthday, a loud bang is heard as the door comes down and Hagrid enters. Hagrid hands Harry one of the letters from Hogwarts, admitting him into the wizarding school. At this point Harry learns the Dursleys have been attempting to hide his wizardry and lied about his parents death.
Hagrid then takes Harry to London to shop for school supplies, where he realizes he is famous among the wizarding people. First, they go to the wizarding bank and Harry learns that his parents had left him a small fortune. A they continue ...

The three then decide they must find the stone before Voldemort does and sneak off the next night. They sneak past the three headed dog, and conduct other impressive feats using Hermione’s knowledge of botany, Ron’s chess ability, and Harry’s flying skills. Harry continues to the room where the stone is held, and finds Professor Quirrell, waiting for him. Harry learns that Quirrell has working been with Voldemort, hosting him underneath his turban. When Harry uses The Mirror of Erised to acquire the stone, he is attacked by Quirrell and Voldemort, but Professor Quirrell burns upon contact with Harry, and Voldemort flies away to find a new host.
The year concludes with what seems like Slytherin winning the house cup, but with the recent events taken into account and last minute points; Gryffindor ends up winning due to Harry and his friends saving the school.

To Kill A Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee. To Kill A Mockingbird takes place in Alabama, and is narrator by the main character, a little girl named Jean Louise ‘’Scout Finch’’. Her father Atticus Finch is a Lawyer with high moral standards. Scout her brother Jem, and their friend Dill are intrigued by the local rumors about a man named Boo Radley, who lives in their neighborhood but never leaves his house.
In the third book of the Harry Potter series, it starts on Harry’s birthday with Harry lying in his room receiving an owl post from his friends. The next morning Harry hears about a man named Sirius Black and that he escaped from a prison. While this goes on, Aunt Marge comes to visit the Dursleys. Harry accidentally causes his aunt to inflate and then runs away to the Knight Bus. But before he gets on the bus Harry sees a large, black dog. The bus drops him off by Diagon Alley and is awaited by Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic. Harry spends the rest of his summer here before going back to Hogwarts.
I’m Brook, and will be telling you about the movie To Kill A Mockingbird. The book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee was published in 1960, the film came soon after in 1962. As you're reading this essay I will tell you about the plot of the movie, the conflicts in the film, my opinion of the movie, and about my favourite character. The story is told from the perspective of Scout, she narrates the film as a flashback.
The year was 1960 when Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird was published. It was an immediate success even winning the Pulitzer Prize. The novel was the first published piece for Lee who was not widely known. The story itself was set in the American South during the Great Depression, which Lee was from and lived during that time. The story examined the angst of childhood, morals of society, racism, and the concept of perception.

Now to get to the Prisoner of Azkaban. Harry Potter is back for the summer at the Dursley’s home. The Dursley’s are his mothers sister, and that family detests Harry in every way possible. They keep him locked up in a cupboard in the basement, take his owl (used for delivering mail etc.) his wand, and his trunk of spell books and everything else he could use to do any bit of magic. Harry’s birthday again passes without being noticed by the Dursley’s, but Harry receives presents from Ron and Hermione and also Hagrid.
I was having a conversation with my grandmother about the final book in the Harry Potter series, which had just been released in the summer of 2007. She had bought it for me as one of my birthday presents and we were discussing our thoughts on J.K. Rowling’s ending of the series. The title of Great Expectations captures the main character comprehensively yet simply. Pips ambitions and expectations for himself are actual tangible things he believes he will achieve, and this belief is both his downfall and his success. His ambitions cause great discord, and stand to cause many more, and yet they are the reason Pip moves so greatly through life.
At the start of the book, Harry was forty-seven and was upset over the belief that he had two separate being that made up his soul, a wolf, and a man, that he decides to kill himself at the age of fifty. After being given a book that spoke about the Steppenwolf, and explained that people are not singular or even two being, they are much more than that. Harry refused the idea and claims that the book did not know him. After being rude to a professor's wife, he believed his wolf side has beaten what was left of his humanity and planned to kill himself early. He stopped at a bar and met a woman named Hermine, who made it her duty to open him up to life. With her help Harry learned to stop analyzing everything and to love life and what it has to offer. Towards the end of the book, at Fancy Dress Ball Harry allowed himself to be immersed in the dancers and eventually was led from their to the school of laughter, where he learns that laughter is the most important thing to help people get through life (Hesse, Steppenwolf). Throughout the plot, Sartre’s belief that people need to take responsibility for their own lives is shown, as Harry’s failure of it almost leads to his suicide, yet his acceptance of it saves him (Baker, “Existentialist of Note”). Plot and Setting- The plot starts out with a little boy name Phillip Pirrip. It is a first person narrative about a boy back in the nineteenth century. The first eight chapters deal mostly with Pip’s childhood years. It also deals with who Pip is, and his family. In the beginning of the story Pip introduces himself, and introduces his dead parents. He is in the graveyard, and then a scary looking man comes up. The man threatens him. The plot of the story I think is good because it deals a lot with the struggles in a child. He has no one to turn to. The author really helped us relate to the story.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, author J.K. Rowling displays the themes of feminism, love, and death because she personally experienced the importance of each. Throughout her lifetime Rowling experienced many difficult and wonderful times with her family, friends, and fans. These experiences and the effects that they had on the author’s life are clearly demonstrated in her written work. Through her characters in this novel Rowling created an outlet that she may solve her problems and relive the wonders of her life not only for herself but for her readers as well.
There are billions of books in the world, all with different plots and styles. However, the one thing they all have in common is that they all have literary devices. A literary device is any technique a writer uses to help the reader understand and appreciate the meaning of the work. Due to the use of these devices, books that would otherwise have nothing in common can be compared. For instance, the books Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift, and If I Stay by Gayle Forman have different plots and themes. But when both are examined closely, it is evident that they utilize many different and similar literary devices.
