As time evolves, so do the words that are essential for our everyday survival. The most obvious difference between humans and animals is our ability to master the art of speech. Often, people will say the “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, a simple nursery rhyme that helps ease a bullied child from abusive words and taunts. But does that really help cure the emotional pain? Words can illuminate and motivate the minds of people but can also shadow their self-esteem through psychological trauma. In The Book Thief, we see how fundamental words were to shape the reality of millions of people caught in the fire of World War II. World War II was a war of atomic bombs, sudden deaths, and most importantly a war of words. Both Allies and axis countries depended on mass communication and media to convey the different messages, words of hate, hope, and patriotic service they needed to say to manipulate the minds of their people. The Book thief uses the power of communication to heal, protect and help fight the injustice that existed in the time of the book. Throughout the narrative, the author conveys the best and worst manners that language can be used. There are instances in this book in which one can see how words have the ability to tear people down, educate and inform, and to inspire individuals to follow their dreams.
Often, we find ourselves facing dramatic events in our lives that force us to re-evaluate and redefine ourselves. Such extraordinary circumstances try to crush the heart of the human nature in us. It is at that time, like a carbon under pressure, the humanity in us either shatters apart exposing our primal nature, or transforms into a strong, crystal-clear brilliant of compassion and self sacrifice. The books Night written by Elie Wiesel and Hiroshima written by John Hersey illustrate how the usual lifestyle might un-expectantly change, and how these changes could affect the human within us. Both books display how lives of civilians were interrupted by the World War II, what devastations these people had to undergo, and how the horrific circumstances of war were sometimes able to bring out the best in ordinary people.
The main character Liesel, known as “the book thief” is who Death is looking over. Liesel, her mother, and brother are on a train to Munich. On the train ride her brother dies. She and her mother get off the train to bury him. The first book Liesel steals is from the gravediggers. They continue the journey to a town called Molching, where Liesel will be raised by foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann. Liesel adjusts to her new home life. Hans teaches Liesel how to read. The war is escalating in Germany. The town holds a book-burning to celebrate Hitler’s birthday. That’s when Liesel steals another book from the flames. Liesel’s job is to deliver laundry to the Hermann family. The Hermanns’ have a library full of books. Liesel is allowed to read them in the study. Meanwhile, a German-Jew named Max needs help, so he seeks out the Hubermanns. Max hides in the basement, so he is safe from the Nazis. Liesel begins stealing books from the Hermanns. The Nazis parade the Jews through the town of Molching on their way to the concentration camp for everyone to see. Liesel is given a blank notebook to write her own story. One night the neighborhood is bombed. Hans, Rosa, and the rest of the neighborhood is killed. Rescue workers find Liesel under the rubble. She leaves behind her finished book, called The Book Thief. Death, who has been watching, rescues the book. Liesel ends up living with the mayor

It amazed me when I realized that the story isn't told by any narrator but it is told by Death. Although the topic is a hard topic to read about, I really got into the world and felt as if I was there. It helps me connect with this horrifying episode in history. The way that Markus described each character with the sense that they are going to die later on in the book intrigued me more and more. Death is fascinated by humans and the way they live and was curious about how we were capable of so much horror and destructions.He is an interesting character to talk about because he is very real but the Markus describes him in a way as if he was standing next to you. Death is always with everyone at all times. Although death sounds like a scary person to talk about, he also has his discomforts and these make his even more real. “I am haunted by humans”, “It kills me sometimes, how people die”. One of the main things he does is collect stories of courageous humans. Liesel is one of those interesting to him because of her courage and her personality. Stories like Liesel's help keep him going. He tells these stories, he says, "to prove to myself that you, and your human existence, are worth it". Throughout the book, Death is humorous, informative, or dark comments. He also likes to skip around in the story's timeline, revealing events to come and then apologizing for giving parts of the story away.
Some say a picture is worth a thousand words, others say that language has power. When Elie Wiesel wrote his memoirs regarding his experience with his Holocaust, he had to “conjure up other verbs, other images, other silent cries” (Wiesel, pg. ix). Throughout this book, the imagery used leaves no question in the reader’s mind about the horrors that this man experienced. He did not have to create a new language, but he did combine aspects of our current language that are not often combined. His word choice and use of subtle description made his message in this book clearer than any picture ever could.

Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief is a tale narrated by Death as he follows nine-year-old Liesel Meminger on her journey through Nazi Germany. Liesel is haunted by Death’s presence from the moment she is introduced to the reader when Death takes away her younger brother, Werner, while travelling to the town of Molching in 1939. She is forced into the home of Rosa and Hans Hubermann, her new foster parents, after being surrendered by her mother since she was no longer capable of taking care of Liesel. After a bad experience at school, Hans helps Liesel learn to read, beginning with The Grave Digger’s Handbook, a book she found at the site where her brother was buried. Liesel quickly becomes absorbed in learning language, which prompts her to steal from a book burning. She is seen by Ilsa Hermann, the mayor’s wife, who encourages Liesel to visit her library. When I first started the novel The Book Thief, I was somewhat skeptical on whether or not I would learn or take away many things from the story, since I already know a lot from that time period. I have family members that have been in combat and my father is a war history buff, but it turned out that I learned a ton from the story. One thing that I learned was that the German soldiers were willing to whip and beat up a fourteen-year-old girl, just because she was talking to a Jew. This was demonstrated later on in the novel when Liesel finally finds Max when he is walking to Dachau and she runs up to him and starts to talk to him.
