“Societies Flaws”
In the article written by Schaefer he points out the many flaws in society that most people do not think about and some are ones that are commonly known within society. The overall topic of the article was mainly social inequality which is when members of society are not treated the same because of the amount of money, power and the sex they are. This article was good to read and I believe that most college students should be reading things of this nature. Articles such as this one exposes the youth to the real world one they often do not know about or see. Society has made us identify what type of American we are. I believe I am more aware of things such as social inequality, social class and the correlation between education and social class. Because being in my community the “black” community we have been taught the higher the education the better your social class. My parents and grandparents have constantly reminded me that education is important and the key to success and achieving a better life. Which is one topic in the article where Schaefer points out the independent and dependent variables. The independent variable being the level of education and the dependent variable being the level of income. From seeing this diagram in the article it correlates with what I have been taught to think my entire life. The amount of money you make depends on how educated you are. So my parents have always taught me to go to school because they believe that money is the key to a successful or comfortable life. In a country with democratic principles, the general public makes an impact on the country, but it’s truly governed by politicians and the incredible power of wealth. Mantsios gives up the economic spectrum break down by giving the facts on the differences between the one who have very little, a lot and not enough money. One myth that Mantsios makes in his essay is how “all Americans do not have an equal opportunities to succeed. Inheritance laws ensure a greater likelihood of success of the offspring of the wealthy” (295). The huge gap between the upper and lower classes shows the social struggle. Higher income classes have a more likely chance for successful inheritance which allows the wealth to get passed on to the offspring.     I am a college student myself and there were only two things in the whole article that I was in agreement with. One was that colleges try to market themselves. The other was her paragraph on how Americans are looking less and less for great paying jobs and are looking more for job that they like doing. This unfortunately is also a contradiction to her piece of writing, because college prepares, and helps you get a job that you will enjoy. Furthermore, the author’s main ideas were not well thought out or well supported. An example of this might be her money investment idea. She implies that if an eighteen year old invested his/hers college tuition money in a bank, and kept it there till he/she was sixty-four, they would be twice as rich as those who go to school, graduate and work in their field of study. What she fails to mention is that while their money is gathering interest, it can not be touched till their sixty-four, and in the mean time they have to be making a living in another job which they probably hate doing. Overall, Bird’s attempt to pursue her readers that college is a waste of time did not work on me.

A quality education allows people to feel accomplished and empowered to get a job that could help their family and their financial needs. In an article by William Bennett, states that American companies estimate that currently there are 3 million jobs available. The downside is that the children are poor and lack the education to fulfill those jobs. The government needs to provide more affordable schooling so that young adults can obtain a higher education to earn a higher salary. Currently, The U.S. Census Bureau reported that in 2014 the poverty rate of people twenty-five and older was 12 percent. Figure 1 demonstrates the statistic provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. It clearly displays that Americans who obtain more years of schooling and further their education, display a lower poverty rate. In 2014, those who have obtained no high school diploma show a greater poverty rate in relation to those who do have a bachelor degree.
