The natural environment surrounds every company. Each company has to make the decision to run with or run against the environmental changes that are constantly occurring. The company Target, sells a wide variety of items that are produced by a variety of other companies. Instead of analyzing each individual item that Target sells it is better to look at the company as a whole and at the Target brand products for sale. Target has been effected by the natural environments raw materials, pollution concerns, and energy costs and has proactively reacted to each situation. Our resources can be burnt down, flooded out, and even poisoned. Consumers are now concerned with the future and how large companies will affect the environment. Companies need to strive create as little pollution as possible. Target recently partnered with Clean by Design, which is “an innovative program to use the buying power of multinational corporations as a lever to reduce the environmental impacts of their suppliers abroad” (Greer 2015). By partnering with this company Target shows that even though some of their clothing is made abroad in places like China, it is still made in an environmental friendly environment. All consumers live on the same earth need to be aware that what happens miles and miles away still affect them. Target also does small things to help with the environmental issue like offering prizes for employees that carpool or ride their bike to work. Every time an employee carpools or rides their bike to work they add their name to a list and at the end of the month there is a drawing for a gift card. This bright color is not traditional and allows Target to stand out from its competitors. When heading to the checkout area it is clear to see that each employee is unique. Target employees are not held to unnecessary standards like being shaven, having perfect, well groomed, hair, and having natural colored hair. The most recent generation takes pride in expressing themselves. Target understands this and steers away from the corporates idea of company standards. A controversial issue that has been surrounding Target, especially in the media, is Target’s recent announcement regarding their bathroom policy. The policy states that their transgender customers may use the bathroom of the gender that they identify with. This announcement had mixed reactions from the public. This decision is very forward thinking and shows that Target is evolving with the social environment. More and more people are identifying transgender and society is slowly accepting this personal decision.
