Tangled, why is better than Rapunzel
In the past years, the filming industry or mostly Disney has taken to turning old classic tales like Cinderella, Briar Rose, and Rapunzel into something that every child (or young adult) enjoy and love. However, what people like Disney have done to these tales have made it so that its more family friendly, since a lot of these tales aren’t so, the best example would be the Grimm story of Snow White where the evil queen was forced to dance to her death by wearing hot shoes. Turning tales like these into something more family friendly is a great opportunity for storytellers to go into more depth of the tale and gives us characters that we can look up too. Rapunzel is the story of a girl who was given to a sorceress because her mother could not resist the rapunzel plant growing in the sorceress’s yard. The sorceress kept the young girl hidden from the world in a high tower, where none could reach her. There were no stairs up to the tower where Rapunzel was kept, so the sorceress would call out to the young maiden and say “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let down your hair.”. One day a prince came along and found Rapunzel and soon they fell in love. The sorceress soon finds out that she is pregnant and then sends her away and blinds the prince. Soon the prince finds Rapunzel, and they live happily ever after with their children. Now the tale of Tangled is somewhat similar, and yet very different and has a tale of its own. The story Tangled is more descriptive and fills in a lot of the plot holes that the Rapunzel tales leave out. One of the changes from the classic tale is Rapunzel’s hair. Her hair is one of the most iconic things about the tale of Rapunzel, in the Tangled story her hair got her and Flynn Rider out of a few tough spots, that aren’t related to her lifting people up and down the tower. Besides that, Rapunzel from the Tangled tale is very aware that she has magical powers, which is why she can never cut her hair, then she loses her powers. She has demonstrated her powers by giving Mother Gothel back her youth and saving Flynn Rider when Mother Gothel stabs him. The only time that Rapunzel from the classic tale was aware of her power was when she was able to heal the prince when the sorceress blinded him. This is only one of the difference in the story, another major change is that in the Rapunzel story her parents gave her up. This contrast with the Tangled film, where Mother Gothel had snuck into the castle and stool the child because she wanted Rapunzel’s power so she can remain young. This was a major change in the plot itself and gives us more to go with the
