Ta- Nehisi Coates’ autobiography, Between the World and Me, has a variety of themes that include: history, racism, and father/son relationships. My essay will be about the father/son relationship theme. There are many points addressed in the father/son relationship; such as fear, fathers not being there for their sons, and lack of communication; just to name a few. The purpose of this essay is to conduct a rhetorical analysis of a father/son relationship in Ta- Nehisi Coates’ Between the World in regarding ethos, pathos, and logos. In our world today, many of the young black men are getting themselves into trouble. Whether it is with guns, drugs, or just ignorant violence, they are finding themselves ruining their lives. Though it is easy to just point fingers at the young men and punish them, we must get the entire picture. A mother can teach her son to ride a bike and he’ll have no problem with remembering. A father is supposed to be there to tell his son not to be afraid. Fear is something that will try to overpower you, but it is up to you to have knowledge more powerful. It is rare to have a genuine fearless heart. There are plenty that will play the hard role until it comes down to them needing to have that same heart; it is then the real man is shown.
